본 논문은 중국인의 북한관광 여행경험과 여행기를 분석해 중국인의 북한 인식을 살펴보았다. 북한 내의 대표적인 외화벌이 수단인 외국인 관광객중 가장 많은 비중을 차지하고 있는 것이 중국인들이며, 북한과 가장 활발한 교류를 하고 있는 사회가 중국사회이다. 중국인 관광객들에 대한 시선을 통해, 한국인들은 쉽사리 접근할 수 없는 북한 사회와 북중관계를 간접적으로나마 이해할 수 있다. 이들의 ‘관광객의 시선(Tourist Gaze)’을 통해 폐쇄적이고 이질적인 사회를 바라볼 때 어떤 시선과 인식이 도출되는지를 분석했다. 중국인들의 북한관광은 다양한 방식으로 활성화되어 있으며, 가족, 장년층, 청년 등 참여하는 이들 역시 다양하다. 북한을 신비한 국가로 보는 시각에서부터, 중조우의에 대한 강조, 문혁에 대한 향수, 공해 없는 청정 국가에 대한 관심, 이질적 사회에 대한 호기심 등 다양한 층위로 구성되어 있다. 북한사회에 대한 관심과 호기심은 중국인들에게는 중국사회에 대한 거울로 작용하며, 이는 북한 자체에 대한 관심이라기 보다는 중국의 과거에 대한 향수의 측면이 있다. 하지만, 북한관광은 북한의 대내외적인 프로파간다에 활용되는 측면이 있기에 윤리적 딜레마가 존재한다.
This paper examines Chinese’ conceptions on North Korean society by analyzing experiences and travelogues of Chinese tourists to North Korea. The most common foreign tourist groups to North Korea are Chinese because China has the most exchange with North Korea. Through the tourist view of Chinese, we can obtain a better, although indirect, understanding of North Korean society. Their views express a variety of Chinese conceptions on North Korea, such as CCP-DPRK friendship, nostalgia for the Cultural Revolution, interests in a pollution-free clean country, curiosity about a mysterious country, etc. Such views reflect on Chinese society and nostalgia for their socialist past. However, such tourism is also advantageous for North Korean propaganda both internally and externally, and raises the issue of ethical dilemma.
