본 논문은 스페인과 전쟁, 아일랜드 정벌전쟁과 해외원정을 위해 탐험대를 내보냈던 엘리자베스 1세 여왕 통치기간과 제임스 1세 집권의 근대초기 영국에서 만들어진 음악의 군사적 맥락 속 의미를 탐구한다. 당시 사회적 지도층인 레스터, 시드니, 에섹스와 이들이 주도한 군사활동과 이들과 추종자들에 의한 움악가 후원활동에 긴밀한 관계가 있음을 증명하고자 한다. 당시 영국은 가톨릭 세력과 전쟁은 정치적으로 군사적으로 분명한 대립과 대중적 지지를 얻기 위해 많은 예술가를 후원하였다. 귀족들을 위한 고급 음악제작뿐만 아니라 가장 대중적 예술형태였던 연극에 사용된 음악에서도 정치성과 군사적 함의를 지닌 작품을 발견하게 된다. 따라서 본 논문은 군대문화가 음악후원과 궁정 내 공연, 종교의식과 대중연극 등 사회전반에 걸쳐 음악이 소비되는 과정을 주목하고, 근대초기 영국사회에서 군대문화 형성과 이의 대중화 배후에 가톨릭교와 전쟁을 지휘하던 군대엘리트들이 지향하고자 했던 프로테스탄트 전사 이미지 강화를 위한 노력이 있었음을 밝히고자 한다.
The purpose of this article is to review the later years of Elizabeth’s reign when England was at war with Spain; continued to deal with armed rebellion in Ireland; and dispatched a maritime expedition fleet to the West Indies. And it also re-evaluate that of early Stuart England. Some of the leading aristocrats and courtiers, such as Leicester, Sidney, Essex, and their circles were actively involved in the military enterprises and thereby played a crucial role in shaping military culture of the age. In this article, I will look at the relationships developed between the leading military figures and leading musicians, and discuss what kind of cultural values were added to military music during the early modern period. Examination of musical works, especially those dedicated to or associated with Sidney and Essex, will help us to see how important music-making (including patronizing musicians, a variety of performances in court, religious music, and music on stage) as well as consumption of musical products were in moulding their reputation as Protestant warriors. The arguments raised in this article thus characterizes the nature of military culture and its significance in early modern England.
