개화기에서 1920년대에 이르는 기간 동안, 나폴레옹이 어떤 모습으로한국에 소개되었으며, 어떤 표상으로 자리잡게 되는지를 종합적으로 파악하는 데 연구자의 궁극적인 지향점이 있다. 본고는 근대 한국에 소개 및수용되었던 나폴레옹의 초상이 어떤 모습이었는지를 파악하기 위한 준비작업이며, 차후의 후속 연구를 개진하기 위한 사전 검토에 해당한다. 나폴레옹에 대한 전기가 단편적인 언급을 벗어나 최초로 자세히 소개되는 첫계기인 『한성신보』 수록 연재물 『나파륜전(拿破崙傳)』과 10여년 뒤 단행본으로 출간되었던 유민상 번역의 『나파륜전사상(拿破崙戰史上)』에 대한기존 연구를 되짚어봄으로써, 그 안에서 우리가 어떤 것을 어느 정도까지이야기해왔으며, 현재 연구되지 못했거나 보완해야 할 사안들로는 무엇이 있는지를 본고를 통해 점검해보고자 했다. 그 과정에서 번역 저본에 대한 문제, 연재 의도에 대한 재고찰이 필요하다는 점을 다시 확인할 수 있었으며, 지금까지 구체적인 비교 검토가 이루어지지 못했던 두 번역의 일부분을 자세히 살펴봄으로써 각 번역의 특징을 대별할 수 있었다. 요컨대 일면 단순해보일 수도 있는 원작의 서문에 대한 논의, 새로 추가된 역자 후기의 역할, 지금까지 주목받지 못했던 또 다른 번역본인 『拿破崙史全』관련 연구의 필요성 등을 차후 과제로 확인할 수 있었다. 아울러 나폴레옹의 국내수용사를 종합하는 동시에 당대 일본, 중국 등 동아시아에서의 궤적을 함께 고려할 필요성 또한 절감할 수 있었다.

Our ultimate objective is to draw up a comprehensive review of Napoleon’s Korean reception between the Korean Enlightenment Period and the 1920s : consider in what circumstances, by whom, for what purpose he was introduced to Korea and take account of his portraits, fruits of this introduction, in relation to his reception in East Asia. This present study is a preparatory step to achieve this objective and we conducted our research two first Korean publications on Napoleon : The biography of Napoleon, serialized in the Hanseongsinbo (1895.11.7∼1896.1.26) and The History of the Napoleonic War I (1908), translated by Yu Min-Sang. We have carefully examined previous studies of both publications and compared some of these translations to examine the distinctive features of each translation. The difference of these two translations are more in para-texts : the first removes not only the preface to the basic text may still add the postface; the second reproduced the preface to the basic text and removes only the last sentence. On these two publications, much is certainly studied, but it still remains to illuminate the basic text of the translation and to reconsider intentions of translator in theirs deletions and additions. Reflect on these questions will be our next research step.
