스타트렉 시리즈는 지난 50년 동안 미국인들에게 꾸준한 사랑을 받아오면서 영욕의 순간들을 경험하였다. 예를 들어 2009년에 개봉된 영화 「스타트렉 XI: 더 비기닝」이 흥행과 비평에 있어서 성공함에 따라 그것이 중단될 위기를 극복한 바가 있었다. 이 논문은 이러한 현상의 이면에 강한 의지에 기초한 실용적 영웅주의에 대한 미국인들의열망이 있음을 밝히는데 목적이 있다. 연구방법으로서 필자는 제1세대와 제2세대 시리즈영화들을 분석하고, 제3세대의 첫 작품인 「스타트렉 XI: 더 비기닝」을 텍스트 중심으로고찰한다. 그 결과 이 영화가 제2세대의 인간과 비인간의 구도보다 제1세대의 이성과 의지의 구도를 복고적으로 추구하여 전체 이야기의 연속성을 확보하는 동시에 후속 작품들에 대한 자유로운 창작을 가능하게 하고 있음이 드러난다. 상업적인 것으로 취급되어온이 과학공상영화 시리즈가 무려 반세기 동안 존속되고 있는 현상이 사회문화학적으로 보기 드물다는 점을 감안하면, 이 연구는 영화에 나타난 미국인들의 정서를 파악하는데 큰도움이 될 것이다.
The Star Trek series have experienced the moments of honor and disgrace while being loved by the Americans for the past 50 years. Also, Star Trek XI: The Beginning(2009) let the whole series overcome the suspension crisis by succeeding regarding sales and criticism. This paper aims at illuminating that the Americans’ passion for the practical heroism based on the strong will is behind this phenomenon. For the research method, I analyse the films of the first and the second generation series and observe Star Trek XI: The Beginning, the first work of the third generation centralized on its text. Through this study, it is revealed that this movie purses the composition of reason and will of the first generation in a restoring way more than that of humans and non-humans of the second generation, secures the continuity of the whole story, and also facilitates the free creation of the subsequent works. Given that it is rare in a social-cultural aspect that the seemingly commercial SF series continues to survive through half a century, this research will help understand the Americans’ emotion hidden in films.
