본 연구는 전통적 공연의 속성인 연극성으로부터 상호매체적 관계를 기반으로확장된 매체성의 관점으로 전환하여 영상화된 공연의 매개된 라이브니스(liveness) 를 재구성할 것을 제안한다. 연극은 20세기에 들어서면서 문자 텍스트인 희곡에기반 했던 전통적 형식에서 점차 배우의 몸, 소리, 무대장치 등의 활용과 연출의역할이 강조되면서 연극성의 개념이 부각되었고, 수용자의 참여에 주목하는 퍼포먼스의 특성을 내포하면서 수행적 연극성의 성격으로 확장되었다. 또한 미디어 환경의변화와 더불어 공연의 매체적 속성은 기술적 매체의 개념을 포함하게 되었으며, 공연과 영상매체를 구분하던 고전적 라이브니스 개념은 공간적 요소보다는 시간적요소와 관객성이 강조되며 수용자의 경험과 정서, 인식의 체계를 포함하는 매개된라이브니스의 개념으로 발전하였다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 공연의 매체성을 매개된경험을 포함하는 성질로 간주하며, 연구자는 이를 연극성과의 연계 속에서 설명하기위해 매개된 라이브니스의 작동요소를 ①시간적 요소, ②공간적 요소, ③관객성으로제시하고 관객성을 다시 ‘현장성’과 ‘수용경험의 공유’로 구분하였다. 그리고 이러한구분을 바탕으로 다양한 양식으로 영상화된 공연의 라이브니스 층위를 개념화하였다. 그 결과, 매개된 라이브니스는 공간적 요소가 배제되는 반면 시간적 요소와관객성, 수용자의 인식 등이 보다 중요하게 작동하며, 라이브캐스트 시네마 시어터(LCT)는 영상매체로 재매개된 공연의 양식 중 가장 상위의 라이브니스를 획득함을확인할 수 있었다. 요컨대, 본 연구는 라이브니스를 미디어 환경과 수용자의 인식및 지각구조의 변화와 맞물려 상호매체적 관계 속에서 연동하는 연속체로 인식한다. 이러한 접근은 점차 확장되는 공연의 범주와 매체성을 이해하는 데 있어 중요한이론적 기틀을 제공할 것으로 기대한다.
This study argues that the theatrical mediality should embrace mediated elements and experiences of theatre and that the concept of liveness should be expanded to include mediated liveness. It is based on three distinct factors: temporality, spatiality and audience. Under the circumstances in which live performers and audiences are not present at the same time and space, interactivity between performers and audiences or between audiences would rather become enhanced to establish mediated liveness. To conceptualize mediated liveness in mediatized theatre, the audience factor of liveness is subdivided into two discrete characteristics: with or without existence of the live audiences on the screen and co-present audiences at the scene. Dealing with liveness as a continuum, this study investigates how mediated liveness is altered by the influence of temporal conditions, interactivity between audiences and audiences’ perception of liveness towards media itself. This study critically enhances the idea of mediated liveness in a rapidly changing media environment and would contribute to further understanding the expanding sphere of theatrical mediality and the sociocultural meaning of theatre under mediated circumstances.
