余英时先生曾在≪士与中国文化≫中将秦汉时期的“士”表达为“吏”与“师”:“秦汉时代,‘士’的活动比较集中地表现在以儒教为中心的‘吏’与‘师’两个方面。”董仲舒作为汉代影响颇深的士大夫,其一生恰好也恰好印证着这二重身份。然而,一个是热衷于构建国家大一统的“吏”,一个是渴望获得士人尊严和自由的“师”,二者间的差异必然导致了矛盾的形成。≪士不遇赋≫的创作,正是董仲舒“吏”与“师”二重身份间矛盾的明证。


Mr Yu Yingshi regarded the word “scholar” as “clerk” or “master” once in the book of “The Scholar and Chinese Culture”. As far as he was concerned in this book, activities of scholars, in Qin and Han dynasties, mostly focused on two sides of clerks and masters which are based on the Confucianism. Dong Zhongshu who acted as a scholar with great influence proved these two different characters in his whole life. Acting as a scholar means that Dong not only devoted to unify the country but also had desire to gain the dignity of clerks and the freedom of masters, which led to the formation of the contradiction. The composition of Shi Bu Yu Fu is a clear certification of that contradiction for Dong Zhongshu.
