본 연구는 줄다리기의 명칭과 문헌을 통해 역사적 전통, 오늘날 마을 단위의 축제 외에 지역문화축제로 거행되는 줄다리기의 전승양상 그리고 줄다리기의 복원과 전승에 담긴 시대성과 문화성을 살핀 것이다. 줄다리기에 관한 조선조 후기 단편적인 세시풍속의 기록이나 문인들에 의해 당대의 풍속을 읊은 한시의 내용을 토대로 줄다리기 명칭을 살핀 결과, 줄을 당기는 모습과 분위기가 유희적인가 혹은 쟁투적인 것인가에 따라 명칭을 달리 차용한 것으로 보고 ‘戱’와 ‘戰’으로 크게 구분하였다. ‘戱’는 줄다리기에 참여하는 마을사람들이 느끼는 즐거움과 흥겨움을 압축한 표현으로 줄다리기의 유희적 성격을 강조한 것이라 할 수 있으며, ‘戰’은 줄다리기에 참여한 이들의 승패를 겨루는 치열하고 열띤 승부욕을 느끼게 하는 경쟁적, 쟁투적인 성격을 강조한 것이라 할 수 있다. 그리고 현재 복원을 통해 전승되고 있는 대규모의 줄다리기는 모두 줄다리기를 중핵으로 하면서 동제, 지신밟기 그리고 다양한 민속놀이가 농악과 함께 연희되고 있다. 특히 이러한 줄다리기는 각각 지역문화축제로 확대 발전하여 줄다리기를 위시한 다양한 민속문화가 연행되고 거기에 현대화된 경연대회, 놀이가 가미되어 축제를 통해 줄다리기를 지역의 문화적 상징으로 표출시키고 이를 축제의 중요한 프로그램으로 상정하면서 축제의 역사성이나 고유성을 부각시키고 있다. 이에 반해 일부 줄다리기는 공식적인 재현을 통해 재전승을 시도했으나 전승력을 확보하지 못한 채 다시 중단되기도 했는데, 이는 전통문화의 계승을 위한 제도적, 행정적, 경제적 기반을 마련하지 못한 것과 민속문화의 유용성에 대한 회의적 시각 등이 복합적으로 작용한 결과라 판단된다. 일제강점기 당시 줄다리기의 전승과 외압에 의한 단절 그리고 현대사회에서 자발적으로 줄다리기를 복원하여 전승하거나 복원하였으나 다시 단절되는 양상은 모두 줄다리기에 투영되어 표출되는 시대성과 문화성의 결과물이라 할 수 있으며, 이 시대성과 문화성은 지역성이라는 또 다른 연결고리로 확대되고 있음을 파악하였다.

This study focused on transmission aspects of Juldarigi, tug of war with straw-rope, one of Korean traditional culture, that is even now shown as local culture festival, and cultural and contemporary character in restoration and transmission, in addition to historical tradition based on vasrious titles and references on Juldarigi. According to examination of historical references, there are two types, amusement(戱) and competition(戰), depending on images and atmospheres of rope-pulling that look so delightful or competitive. Local transmission aspects of Juldarigi and understanding of observers led to different names to show fundamental characteristics of tug-of-war. Now, these local types of Juldarigi are respectively extended and developed into local culture festival, for example, Youngsan Juldarigi, Gijisi Juldarigi, Samcheock Gijudarigi, Gwangju Chilseok Gossaum and Uiryeong Keunjul Danggigi(rope-pulling). In other words, they show Juldarigi as a cultural icon to expose historical and peculiar character of festivals. In other areas, however, there are some examples that prove unsuccessful and discontinued in spite of efforts for retransmission. In this sense, this study emphasized to understand Juldarigi as a result of cultural and contemporary character at the time, that historically on the way of transmission, restoration and discontinuity.
