이 논문은 <소현성록> 여성 인물들에게 부여된 색과 덕의 관계를, 두 가지 모두 갖춘 경우, 색에 비하여 덕이 부족한 경우, 덕에 비하여 색이 부족한 경우, 두 가지 모두 부족한 경우로 나누어 살펴보았다. <소현성록>에서 덕과 색을 함께 갖춘 여성은 모두 적대자에 의해 고난을 받지만 끝내 행복한 결말을 맞는다. 이들은 독자들에게 당대의 이념에 충실한 여성으로 받아들여지는 동시에 그들에게 이상적인 여인상을 제시하는 역할을 한다. 덕은 부족하지만 색을 갖춘 여성은 모두 징치되어 죽거나 쫓겨난다. <소현성록>의 작가는 이들 인물들의 ‘개과’에 대해서는 부정적 입장을 견지하고 있다. 이들에 대한 서술은 미모, 문제적 성품, 문제적 성품에 따른 문제적 행위, 상대에 대한 모해의 순서로 진행된다. 덕은 갖추었으나 색이 부족한 여성은 남편과 잠시 불화를 겪기는 하지만 행복한 삶을 산다. 이 인물은 <소현성록>이 실상 덕을 중시하고 있다는 사실을 강조하여 보여주기에 적합하다. 그래서 관련된 서사가 끝난 후 다시는 작품의 전면에 등장하지 않는다. 덕을 중시한다는 메시지 전달 임무가 끝났기 때문이다. 덕과 색이 부족한 여성은 부족하지만 그럭저럭 괜찮은 부류와 아주 부족한 부류로 나뉜다. 이들은 회과를 하는 감화의 대상이다. 이들의 변화는 덕도 부족하고 색도 부족한 여성에서, 천성인 색은 어쩔 수 없지만 덕만은 갖춘 여성으로 재탄생하는 과정을 보여준다. <소현성록>의 여성에 대한 이러한 평가는 이후의 대장편소설 작품에 지속적인 영향을 미친 것으로 판단된다.
This essay will research the relationship between the virtue and the beauty that emerge from the female characters of <Sohyunseongrok>. It can be divided into the case where both beauty and virtue are present; the case where virtue, compared to beauty, is insufficient; the case where beauty is scarcer than virtue; and the case where both of them are inadequate. In <Sohyunseongrok>, all the women that possess virtue and beauty have to endure hardships cast upon them by their enemies. However, they will achieve a happy ending. These female characterswill be accepted by the readers ascharacters faithful to the Confucian ideology, while exerting influence by suggesting an idealistic symbol of the woman. The characters possessing beauty, but lacking in virtue, are firstpunished and then they die, or they are cast out. The author of <Shyunseongrok>"holds on to a negative stance on the repentance of the female characters. This narration proceeds frombeauty, to a temperament not so very good, then to a negative behaviour caused by this temperament and finally to a plot to do harm to kind characters. A woman of good virtue, but lacking in beauty,overcomes a short moment of discord with her husband, eventually going on to live a happy life. This character suits the viewpoint of <Sohyunseongrok> in putting emphasis on the importance of virtue. Therefore, when the narrative about this female character ends, she will not appear again in the entire work because the task of delivering this message about the importance of virtue has been completed. Characters who are lacking in both beauty and virtue aredivided in two: a category for those who are lacking but still tolerable, and those who are completely inadequate. They repent andso they are reformed. Their transformation shows the process that starts from women lacking in virtue and beauty, to create female characters who possess only virtue, as they cannot do anything about beauty. This evaluation on the female characters of <Sohyunseongrok> will make a judgement over the continuous influence bestowed upon the following long novels.
