본 연구는 한국군과 미군의 손자병법 활용 실태를 조사하여 그 인용 빈도수를 토대로 손자병법에서 주요하다고(major) 판단되는 구절들을 선별하기 위한 연구이다. 손자병법은 2,500년 전 중국 춘추전국시대에 손무(孫武)가 지은 매우 유명한 병서로, 동서고금을 가리지 않고 사회 각 계층과 수많은 분야에서 많이 연구되고 활용되고 있다. 총 6,109자 13편으로 구성된 손자병법은 함축적인 표현과 어려운 한자들로 이루어져 있어 독자들이 모든 구절을 제대로 이해하기에는 시간이 다소 많이 걸린다. 따라서 손자병법의 수많은 구절 중 주요한 부분을 선별하여 손자병법을 공부하고자 하는 군인들에게 시간의 절약과 이해의 도움을 주는 것이 이 연구의 목적이다. 본 연구의 가설은 ‘한국군이든 미군이든 군무(軍務)와 관련하여 손자병법을 인용하는 횟수가 많은 구절일수록 주요한 구절’이라는 것이다. 인용의 모습이 객관적으로 인정되고 정형화되어 있는 것을 찾기 위해, 세 가지 기준에서 인용 빈도수 조사를 통해 주요 구절을 선별하였다. 첫 번째는 한국군 교리에서의 손자병법 인용 빈도, 두 번째는 미군 교리에서의 손자병법 인용 빈도, 세 번째는 전투지휘훈련 사후검토에서의 손자병법 인용 빈도이다. 가장 많은 인용 빈도를 보인 총 10개의 구절들을 선별하였고, 각 구절에 대한 영문 번역본을 추가하여 미군들과의 연합훈련과 전술토의에서 활용할 수 있도록 하였다. 손자병법에 관한 매우 간단한 연구지만, 손자병법에 관심 있어도 엄두를 못 냈던 사람들과, 연합작전간 미군과의 수준 높은 의사소통을 위해 손자병법을 인용하고자 하는 군인들에게 조금이라도 도움이 되길 바란다.
This study is on the selection of major and important phrases from Sun Tzu's Art of War by counting and researching ROK and US forces' reference frequency of the phrases. Sun Tzu's Art of War, a military strategic book which was created around 2,500 years ago, has been widely studied by many scholars all around world so far. It consists of 6,109 chinese letters and 13 chapters. It also includes many implicated words and difficult archaic chinese letters, so it usually takes a lot of time for a reader to understand all the contents of it. Therefore, the purpose of the research is finding several major phrases from the Art of War in a military standpoint. Our hypothesis is that the phrases which were referred more occasionally in military affairs are more major than the others. The cases of reference should be objective and countable. Finally, we figured out three standards for counting the references. The first is the frequency of reference in ROK force's military doctrines. The second is the frequency of reference in US force's military doctrines. Last one is the reference frequency in BCTP(Battle Command Training Program) AARs(After Action Review). We chose 10 major phrases according to these standards and added English versions of the phrases in order to help utilization of the phrases when ROK soldiers have tactical discussions with US soldiers. Although this study is considered simple compared to others, it could benefit those who wants to learn about the essentials of Art of War in a short period of time or use high level phrases in a conversation with US comrades.
