윤동주의 시「십자가」는 그의 시 중에서 가장 널리 알려진 작품 중 하나이다. 그런데「십자가」는 민족을 위한 희생과 순교라는 관점에서만 주로 이해되어오고 있다. 이러한 해석은 이 작품 특유의 긴장을 놓치는 결과를 낳는다. 그의 시작(詩作) 과정 전체를 통해 볼 때도「십자가」는 하나의 변곡점을 이루는 중요한 작품이므로「십자가」자체에 대한 섬세한 이해뿐만 아니라, 그의 시작 과정 전반에 대한 이해를 위해서도「십자가」에 대한 분석은 좀더 정치하게 이루어질 필요가 있다. 이러한 목적을 달성하기 위한 분석 도구의 하나로 본고에서는 숭고의 개념을 활용하고자 한다. 이때 선결되어야 할 과제는 숭고의 개념을 한정하여 정립하는 일이다. 숭고는 워낙 다양한 의미의 진폭을 지니고 있어서, 개념을 한정하지 않고는 논의의 혼란을 초래할 위험이 상존한다. 이 위험으로부터 벗어나기 위해 본고에서는 윤동주의 시 특히「십자가」와「십자가」를 전후한 작품들의 맥락을 새로운 관점에서 살피는 데 가장 유효하다고 판단되는 범주로 숭고의 의미를 좁힌 후, 그 개념을 활용해「십자가」와 일련의 작품들을 분석한다. 이 분석 과정에서「십자가」에 함축된 긴장과 혼란, 그것을 마주하는 시적 주체의 두려움과 떨림, 실존적 정직성과 정신의 깊이, 그리고 이러한 것들을 시화하는 원리 등에 대한 이해가 깊어질 것이라 생각한다.
Yun Dong-ju's poetry “the Cross” is one of the most widely known works among his poems. However, “the Cross” has been primarily understood only in terms of sacrifice and martyrdom for the nation. This interpretation results in the consequence to miss out the unique tension in the work. When viewed through the whole process of his making a poem, “the Cross” is an important work forms the inflection point. So it is nessary that we read the text closely to understand the overall process of his making a poem as well as to understand “the Cross” itself. This paper utilizes the concept of the sublime as one of the analytical tools to achieve this purpose. At this point the task solved first is the one that sets the limit the concept of the sublime. Because the sublime has various meanings, a risk causing confusion of discussions always exists. This paper analyses “the Cross” and the works written before and after “the Cross” by utilizing the effectively limited meaning of the sublime in order to escape from this danger. This analysis will give deeper understanding of tension and confusion implied in “the Cross”, of the fear and trembling, the existential honesty and the depth of the sprit of the poet facing it, and of the principle of creating poetry with these things.
