본 연구는 리통기국과의 관계를 중심으로 조선 후기 인물성동이논쟁의 특징을 분석하였다. 이를 위해 먼저 인물성논쟁의 배경이 되는 문제 상황을 구체적으로 설정하였다. 그것은 리일분수적 체계 안에서 인물성을 정합적으로 해명하되, 리통기국의 틀에 기반하여 그 설명을 추출해내는 것이다. 남당 한원진은 이러한 문제의식을 구체화하고 쟁점으로 부각시키는 데 중요한 역할을 했다. 그는 본연지성과 도(道)의 관계를 중심으로 인물성이 달라야한다는 논증을 제시했고, 여러 동료들의 동의를 얻는 데 성공했다. 그의 주장은 인물성 논쟁의 촉발과 전개에 중요한 동인이 되었다. 인물 간에 다른 본연지성을 설명하기 위한 남당의 성삼층설과 이를 반박한 외암 사이의 논쟁은 리통기국의 틀에 기반하여 리일분수와 인물성의 문제를 해명하는 과정에서 나타날 수 있는 난점과 특징적 양상을 잘 보여준다. 리일분수적 관점에서 리일의 보편적인 리와 인물의 분수의 성은 서로 필연적이고 연속적인 관계를 가져야 한다. 그런데 상대적으로 기의 제약성이 더 강조되는 리통기국의 틀에서는 보편적인 리를 상정하고, 오직 기의 매개, 즉 기국을 통해서만 구분의 논리를 확보해야 한다. 그래서 기국을 이해하는 방식이 중요한 쟁점이 되는데, 본 논문에서는 그것을 규정적 관계와 제약적 관계로 설명하였다. 이러한 관점에서 남당과 외암의 입장 차이가 분석되었고, 리통기국과 인물성논쟁의 관계가 전체적으로 조명되었다.
This study analyzed the character of the debate about Inmulseong(人物性 : nature of human and things) in relation to the theory of itong giguk(理通氣局: principle is penetrating and material force is limited). For this purpose, first, the problem situation of the dabate has been specifically defined. The situation requires an explanation of the relationship between Inmulseong and the view of iil bunsu(理一分殊: principle is one but manifested diversely). And, the explanation had to be based on the theory of itong giguk. Han Won-jin definitized and made an issue of the problem. He argued that because the bonnyeon_ji seong(本然之性: original nature) and do(道: the way) should macth, human nature and animal nature are different. Many of his colleagues supported this argument. He had a great influence on the debate about Inmulseong. The controversy between Han Won-jin and Yi Gan represents the difficulties of explaining the relationship between Inmulseong and il bunsu based on the theory of itong giguk. On the view of il bunsu, the universal principle and the nature of human and things should have a necessary relationship. But, itong giguk emphasizes the effects of gi(氣: material force). From that point of view, a mechanism that derives the different natures from a universal principle is only possible through different gi. So, the way to understand giguk(氣局: material force is limited) became an important issue. This study defined the way as ‘regulative’ or ‘limited’ relationship. From this point of view, the issues of Han Won-jin and Yi Gan were analyzed, and the relationship between itong giguk and the debate about Inmulseong has been illuminated.
