The purpose of this study was to analyze the results of a survey conducted among elementary teachers concerning reconstruction of 3rd and 4th grade English textbooks for the 2009 revised national curriculum. The survey consisted of the following three areas: 1) How positively the teachers perceive the textbooks; 2) How and why the teachers reconstruct the textbooks; 3) What the teachers suggest in order to solve the difficulties in the reconstruction process. The teachers showed a higher degree of satisfaction for the activities in the 1st and 2nd period than those in the 3rd and 4th period. The reasons for reconstruction involved students’ interest and understanding, improvement of the four language skills, and compensatory learning for each individual student. Many teachers reconstructed during each class and substitution of activities was the most popular type of reconstruction. Game activities in the ‘Speak & Play’ section were reconstructed most frequently by all participants. The remarkable improvement in students’ interest in and enjoyment of English was pointed out as the main effect of reconstruction. Such factors as lack of time, deficiency of teaching materials, and differences in students’ proficiency levels caused the difficulties. Some implications and suggestions for effective textbook reconstruction were included.
