지시 문제는 기호학, 언어 철학을 관통하는 문제이며 의미의 문제와 불가분의 관계에 있다. 지시 문제는 언어, 기호 또는 텍스트를 통해서 우리에게 전해오는 메시지의 의미를 이해하는 원리와 방식을 찾고자 하는 것이다. 본 연구에서는 지시한다는 것이 무엇인가, 무엇을 지시한다는 것인가, 그리고 지시 기호와 지시 대상 간 관계가 무엇인가에 대한 질문으로부터 출발한다. 본 연구에서는 기호 기능론에 정초한 기능 생성론에서 제시하는 지시 이론을 고찰함으로써 기호학적 지시 문제에 대한 연구 방향을 찾는다. 연구 결과 기호 생성론의 지시 이론은 기호학적 지시를 구현하는 원리를 제공하는 것으로 나타났다. 결론부에는 기호학적 지시 이론과 실천을 위한 향후 과제를 제시하였다.
The issue of reference is one of the main issues through semiotics and linguistic philosophy. In this paper the following questions are raised: what is reference, what is the one referred to, and how they can be extended perceptually. To access these questions two preliminary semiotic theories are selected, and studied in the points above. That ultimate purpose of the work is to comprehend the messages coming to us from many ways. The two semiotic theories selected are the sign function theory by Hjelmslev and the sign production theory by U. Eco. These are persistently on the same structural ground in relationships between form and contents. Eco’s theory has been found providing a methodology for linking a sign and a perceptual concept as a referent, by employing the way for merging the latter with the first by converting the latter to semiotic object and putting the object to semiotic process. Future works for developing semiotic reference theory have been proposed.
