이 논문은 뉴욕지역 최초의 한인문학 동인지『신대륙』수록 소설 작품에 나타난 1980년대 재미한인 이민자의 초상에 대해 알아보는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 『신대륙』은 1985년 가을에 창간되어 1986년 봄, 겨울에 각각 2호와 3호를 내고 폐간되었다. 이 동인지는 비록 3호를 내는 데 그치고 말았지만 그 의미는 결코 작다고 할 수 없다. 『신대륙』의 가장 큰 특징은 현지에서 등단한 작가들이 주축이 되어 결성되었다는 점, 시, 소설, 수필, 희곡 등 다양한 분야의 작품을 담고 있다는 점, 그리고 무엇보다도 소설작품의 비중이 가장 크다는 점이다. 『신대륙』수록 소설작품은 총 11편이다. 이들 소설작품은 대부분 한인 이민자들이 미국에서 겪는 어려움과 문제점을 구체적이고 생생하게 보여주고 있다. 작품에는 당시 이민자들 계층과 이민 동기, 그리고 적응과 정착과정에서 빚어지는 여러 갈등들이 드러나고 있다. 인물들은 답답한 한국의 정치 현실을 떠나 자유로운 삶을 누리기 위해, 가난에서 벗어나 물질적인 성취를 위해, 개인적인 이유로 한국에서 도피하기 위하여 등 각기 다른 이유로 이민을 선택했지만 대부분은 미국사회에 대한 정확한 이해와 인식 없이 막연한 동경과 기대를 가지고 미국으로 건너갔고, 그로 인해 예상치 못한 어려움에 봉착하며 현실적응의 어려움을 겪는다. 『신대륙』수록 소설작품들은 1980년대 뉴욕지방 한인 이민자들의 삶의 공간과 모습을 그들 특유의 화법으로 그려내고 있다는 점에서 큰 의미가 있다. 당시 뉴욕지역 이민자들의 생생한 삶의 현장을 담아내고 있고 작품을 만나기는 그리 쉽지 않다. 따라서 『신대륙』수록 소설 작품은 1980년대 재미한인 이민자의 모습을 구체적으로 알 수 있게 해준다는 점과, 여기에 현재 다문화 사회에 진입한 우리 사회의 다양한 이민자 문제를 이해하는 하나의 자료로서도 유의미할 수 있다는 점에서 가치가 있다고 본다.
This article aims at explaining about the 80’s Korean immigrants’ portrait in novels of 『New Continent』(Sin-Dae-Ryuk), the first Korean literary coterie magazine in New York. 『New Continent』 was published in autumn of 1985 for the first time, continued to be published in spring and autumn as number 2 and 3, and has been discontinued. Though this magazine has only 3 numbers of publishing, we could see its significance as an origin for literary in New York. The important features of 『New Continent』 are that it was founded with the people who started their literary career in New York, that it has various genre like poem, fiction, essay and play, and that it has more novels than any other genre. 『New Continent』 has 11 works of fiction in total. These works describe the difficulties and problems that the most Korean immigrants suffered. We can see in the works the levels of the immigrants, their motive of immigration, and their conflicts in their process of adaptation. The characters decided to immigrate for a freedom of life leaving the complicated Korean political reality, for the material affluence from poverty, or for escaping from a personal reason. However, most of them with vague yearning, didn’t have exact understanding or recognition about the society of USA, which produced many difficulties. It is important that the novels in 『New Continent』 describe the 80’s Korean immigrants’ lives in New York in their unique ways. There are not many works that describe the immigrants’ vivid realities of that time in New York. So, the value of 『New Continent』 is that its works show the 80’s Korean immigrants’ lives concretely, and also that we could consider it as a material to understand the immigrants’ problems in our multicultural society.
