이 논문은 지금까지 대구시민회관 부근에 있었다고 잘못 알려져 온 북후정의 실제 위치를 확인하고 그 경위를 규명했다. 북후정은 1907년 대구에서 시작된 국채보상운동의 진행과정에서 최초로 군민대회가 개최된 역사적 장소이다. 유생과 상인층이 주도하던 국채보상운동은 이날의 군민대회를 거치면서 범국민적 민족운동으로 확산되었다. 따라서 북후정은 광문사, 수창사와 함께 국채보상운동을 기념하는 대표적 장소로 평가·기록된다. 북후정은 원래 대구읍성의 서쪽 문 밖에 존재했던 관아 건물(公廨)로 읍북루란 명칭을 사용하기도 했다. 사료에 따르면 북후정은 경상감영에서 서쪽으로 2리 또는 3리쯤 되는 곳, 옛 서문시장 입구에 서 있었다. 그리고 이런 사실은 고지도나 사진들을 통해 간단히 확인된다. 그렇지만 관련 기관·단체들은 지금껏 1차 자료를 확인하는 대신 일부 연구자의 잘못된 논문에 의지해 “북문 밖 북후정” 이란 입장을 견지했다. 이 때문에 국채보상운동기념비는 엉뚱한 장소에 건립되었고 시민들에게도 그동안 잘못된 사실을 홍보해 왔다. 늦었지만 잘못 기록된 전시물의 내용 등을 수정하는 작업을 서둘러야 할 것이다.
This study identifies the real venue of Bukhujung and how it was misunderstood that it was located near the present venue of Daegu Citizen Hall. Bukhujung was a historic site where the first Daegu Residents’ Convention was held during the National Debt Repayment Movement which got a good start in Daegu, 1907. Confucian scholars and the merchant class led the National Debt Repayment Movement which became the nationwide racial movement going through the Daegu Residents’ Convention. Therefore, Bukhujung was appreciated and recorded as a monumental-representative venue for the National Debt Repayment Movement along with Kwang-Moon Sa and Su-Chang Sa. Bukhujung was called as Eupbukroo which was a government office building located outside of the west gate of Daegu Fortress (Daegu Eupseong). According to historical sources, Bukhujung lied between two-Ri and three-Ri from the west of Kyungsang Provincial Office, and stood in front of the entrance of the past Seomun Market. These facts can be simply proved by the ancient maps and/or pictures. However, some related organizations and institutes have, so far, relied on some flawed arguments without searching for primary sources, and have kept their opinion for “Bukhujung outside of the north gate.” Accordingly, a monument to the memory of the National Debt Repayment Movement was elected in the other place due to the misunderstanding, and the citizens, meanwhile, promoted the misconception. It is needed to identify the right venue of Bukhujung and restore it, and to hurry the operation to remedy the wrongly recorded exhibits.
