The book of Nahum begins with a psalm, which has been a subject of heated debates among Nahum scholars since the possibility to trace the underlying pattern of an acrostic in Nahum 1 was raised in the end of 19the century. Over the century the psalm has been suffered from scholarly questionings, challenges, repositions, reconstructions, and emendations. The controversies are not settled down. A great deal has been written on the beginning of the book. However, it is interesting to note scholars' concern that has been spent on the hypothetical issues and how little has been spent in seeking to understand the meaning and function of the psalm in the final form of the book. Thus the present article will briefly introduce the controversial issues related to the psalm in Nahum 1, and then suggest two assumptions and their interpretive implications, which will be followed by the investigation on the meaning and function of the introductory psalm as it is presented in the final form of Nahum. The purpose of this article is not to save the psalm out of the unsettled controversies, but to revive it in the present form of the book as it is by reaffirming that the psalm conveys its meaning with clarity and performs a semantic and structural function in the book.
나훔서는 시로 시작하는데, 19세기 말에 나훔 1장에 알파벳시의 형식이 있었을 가능성이 제기된 이후로 이 시는 나훔 학자들 간에 주요 논쟁의 주제가 되어 왔다. 1세기가 넘게 이 시(1:2-8)는 학자들의 수많은 질문과 도전, 재배열과 수정 등의 혹한 시련을 겪어 왔다. 논쟁은 아직도 진행 중이다. 그러나 흥미롭게도 학자들의 관심이 가정적 이슈에 집중되면서 최종형태의 나훔서에서 이 시(1:2-8)가 갖는 의미와 기능을 연구하는 작업은 다소 외면되었다. 따라서 본소논문은 나훔 1장의 시와 관련된 논쟁 중인 이슈들을 간략히 소개한 후, 최종형태의 나훔서에 제시된 바와 논쟁에 근거해서 두 개의 가정과 이에 따른 해석적 적용을 제언하려고 한다. 본소논문의 목적은 논쟁에서 이 시를 구해내는 것이 아니라 이 시를 최종형태의 나훔서에 다시 살려내는 것이다. 이것은 이 시가 그 의미를 분명히 전달하고 있는 것과 나훔서 안에서 의미론적, 구조적 기능을 하고 있는 것을 다시 확인하는 것을 통해 이루어질 것이다.
