이 글은 전혜린의 글쓰기에 나타난 독일 토포필리아의 양상에 주목해 독일이라는 장소와 장소기억이 전혜린이라는 개인이 세계 내에서 자신의 존재 좌표를 설정하는 데 어떻게 관여하고 있는지를 살피는 데 목적이 있다. 그리고 이를 통해 전혜린의 글쓰기가 지니는 의미를 되새겨보고자 한다. 뮌헨 ‘슈바빙’이라는 장소는 전혜린의 기억과 글쓰기의 근원적인 토포스(topos)를 이루고 있다. 그러므로 전혜린의 글쓰기는 슈바빙에 ‘대한’ 기록이 아니라 슈바빙으로부터의 말하기, 슈바빙이 가능하게 했던 실존의 기록이라 할 수 있다. 전혜린의 독일행이 내면에 자리잡은 실향(失鄕)의식과 관련이 있다고 할 때, 슈바빙은 ‘먼 데에 대한 그리움’이 구현된 장소로서 존재의 토포스로 기능한다. 그곳에서 전혜린은 반속물주의를 지향하는 ‘대학생’에게서 ‘슈바빙적인 것’과 슈바빙의 정신을 발견하고, 자아의 이념형(Idea-blid)으로 동일시한다. 그러나 ‘귀향’이 불가능성을 전제로 고향을 찾아가는 행위라 할 때 어떤 장소에서도 존재의 완전한 정주는 불가능하다. 전혜린의 글에서 발견되는 일상에 대한 낯설음, 권태와 광기, 반항과 방황 등은 바로 이 같은 고향 상실의 징후들로서, 이 상실감은 근본적으로 자기와 참 자기 사이의 실존적 거리감에서 비롯된다. 그러나 전혜린은 기억 속에서 슈바빙을 끊임없이 소환함으로써 ‘슈바빙적인 것’과 유기적으로 관계 맺으면서 존재 망각에 저항하고자 했다. 전혜린의 글쓰기는 권태와 상실에 대항해 자신의 실존적 고향(topos)을 재탈환하려는 분투의 흔적인 것이다. 이런 의미에서 전혜린의 독일행은 고향을 찾아나서는 근원적 충동의 여로였고, 독일이라는 장소를 소환하는 글쓰기는 자아의 동일성을 회복하려는 ‘귀향’의 글쓰기였다고 할 수 있다.
This research aimed at investigating the aspect of German topophilia in Jeon, hyerin’s writing and understanding the relation between the place, German, and Jeon, hyerin. Jeon, hyerin’s writing is a text to remember the place, ‘Schwabing’ of Munich, Germany. In her writing, Schwabing makes the fundamental topos of every memory. Her studying in Germany was driven with the consciousness of loss of hometown, which is ‘longing for a distant place’, accordingly, Schwabing was a place where German word ‘Fernweh’ was realized. She discovers the spirit of Schwabing in Munich University students’ anti-snobbery, identifying as an ideal type of the self. However, simultaneously, Jeon, hyerin’s writing expresses the symptoms of loss of hometown such as unfamiliarity to daily lifew, weariness and madness, disobedience and wandering, etc. This sense of loss is generated from existential distance between the self and true self. Jeon, hyerin intended to resist the existence forgetting and sense of loss by remembering and recording Schwabing. Therefore, Jeon, hyerin’s writing is a trace of a struggle to retake her existential hometown(topos) by resisting weariness and loss. That is, Jeon, hyerin’s depart for Germany was a journey of fundamental impulse to search her hometown, and her writing was that of ‘going home’ to fill hunger of spirit.
