이 연구의 목적은 중학교 학생들이 영어 독해하는데 어려움을 느끼는 것에 대해 알아보고 영어 단편소설을 통해 영어 독해 능력을 향상하는 것이다. 이를 위해 실험집단은 10주 동안 ‘오핸리’의 「마지막 잎새」를 활용하여 수업을 진행하였다. 이 효과를 확인하기 위해 독해관련 문제 20문제를 발췌하여 사용하였다. 자료 분석은 통계프로그램인 SPSS 12.0을 사용하였다. 그 결과 첫째, 실험집단과 통계집단의 비교에서는 실험집단의 성적이 유의미하게 높게 나온 것을 알게 되었다. 그리고 둘째, 학생들의 숙달도에 따른 성취도 검사에는 실험집단의 중위집단과 하위집단의 성적이 통제집단의 중, 하위 집단보다 더 높은 성적을 받았음을 알 수 있었다. 셋째, 단편소설을 활용한 수업에 대한 흥미도 및 만족도에 있어서도 단편소설 읽기 수업에 참여한 학생들이 높은 흥미도와 만족도를 보였다. 이러한 연구 결과로 볼 때 영어단편소설을 활용한 영어 읽기 수업은 학생들의 영어 독해력 향상에 도움이 됨을 알 수 있었다.
The purpose of this study is to research middle school students' English reading problems and to suggest how to improve their English reading competence through the use of the short story in English. The experimental group had been taught through short story in English “The Last Leaf” by O. Henry for 10 weeks. The data needed for this study was obtained by the test paper with 20 questions about the English reading. The data analyzing method were the t-test through the statistics program SPSS 12.0. The result are as follows. First, the mean score for the experimental group was significant higher than that of control group. Second, it was found that there were significant differences in the intermediate and low levels of English proficiency. Third, most of the students who were taught reading by short story in English activity responded that they were more interested in and more satisfied with the reading lesson than the students in the control group. From the results of this study, we found that the use of short story in English reading activity were more effective in improving the students' reading competence than the use of the English lesson.
