본 논문의 목적은 종교조직인 천도교를 사회운동조직으로 오해하는 것을 바로잡으려고 하는 데 있다. 사회운동조직으로 보일 정도의 왕성한 천도교 활동은 천도교의 교리를 실천한 결과물임을 밝힘으로 오해를 바로잡고자 한다. 즉 종교조직의 활동은 종교 조직의 교리 실천의 결과라는 보편성과 함께 천도교 교리와 활동의 특수성을 밝혀내는 것이다. 천도교는 전신인 동학 때부터 사회의 변화를 꿈꿨다. 동학혁명이 바로 그것이다. 이후 일제강점기 때에는 3･1운동을 주도했고, 대한민국임시정부는 물론 다양한 독립단체에서 독립운동에 힘썼다. 독립운동뿐만 아니라 어린이날을 제정하는 것과 같은 사회문화운동도 실천했다. 해방 후에는 정당을 설립하여 현실정치에 참여했다. 천도교의 여러 정치사회 활동은 교리인 교정쌍전에서 비롯된다. 교정쌍전은 정교일치, 신정국가와는 다르다. 정치와 종교를 대립하는 관계로 보는 서구의 정교분리와는 달리 정치와 종교를 상생하는 관계로 바라보고 있다. 교정쌍전이라는 교리 실천의 결과가 다양한 정치사회활동인 것이다. 종교인은 해당 종교의 교리를 실천하는 것은 당연한 일이다. 자신 종교의 교리를 실천하지 않는 것이 문제인 것이지 실천하는 것을 이상하게 바라봐서는 안된다.
The purpose of this paper is to correct the misunderstanding about Chondogyo as religious organization. Because Chondogyo is the ethnic religion, the misunderstanding about Chondogyo is the misunderstanding about us, Korean. The ethnic religion is the result of ethnic wisdom. A decline of the ethnic religion is the problem of us, Korean. So the misunderstanding about Chondogyo should be corrected. Several political and social activities of the Chondogyo come from doctrine of Gyojungssangjun(敎政雙全, 교정쌍전). Gyojungssangjun means developing together religion and politics. Activities under the Religious doctrine is natural. So Chondogyo’s political and social movement have been the practice of doctrine, Gyojungssangjun.
