이 논문의 목적은 미국의 대표적인 기독교 영성학자인 샌드라 슈나이더스의 기독교 영성학을 소개하고 그 방법론이 구체적으로 어떻게 지티유(Graduate Theologcal Union)라는 신학교육 기관의 박사과정 프로그램에 적용되었는지를 살펴보는 것이다. 슈나이더스는 기독교 영성학의 연구대상을 기독교인의 삶의 경험이라고 주장했다. 경험을 연구하는 학문으로서 기독교 영성학의 특징은 간학문적이며 자기 참여적이다. 슈나이더스가제시하는 기독교 영성학의 방법론은 해석학적 방법론으로서 현상의 서술–비평적 분석–구성적 해석이라는 세 단계를 거치며 순환한다. 슈나이더스는 동료 교수들과 함께 자신의 방법론을 1992년에 지티유 기독교 영성학 박사과정에 실험적으로 적용하였다. 지티유 기독교 영성학 박사과정2011년 판 프로토콜은 슈나이더스가 자신의 방법론에서 강조한 간학문적특성과 해석학적 순환의 세 단계를 잘 반영하고 있다. 슈나이더스의 기독교 영성학 방법론은 미국 기독교 영성학회에 큰 영향을 끼쳤는데, 한국 교회와 신학에도 긍정적인 통찰과 도전을 준다.
This paper aims to introduce Sandra Schneiders’ thoughts on the study of Christian spirituality and to explore how her methodology has been applied to the Ph. D. program of Graduate Theological Union. Schneiders argues that the object of the study of Christian spirituality is the lived experience of the Christian life. The study of Christian spirituality focusing on experience is interdisciplinary and self–implicating. Her methodology is hermeneutics and interpretation which consists of three circulatory steps, that is, description of the phenomenon, critical analysis, and constructive interpretation. With her colleagues, Schneiders has applied her methodology to the Ph. D. program of GTU Christian Spirituality area in 1992. The 2011 protocol of the Ph. D. program reflects well the interdisciplinary and hermeneutic characteristics on which Schneiders emphasized in her methodology. As Schneiders’ methodology of the study of Christian spirituality has greatly affected on the Society for the Study of Christian Spirituality in the United States, it surely offers positive insights and challenge to Korean churches and theology.
