작가에게 있어 ‘중기’는 형식 면, 내용 면에서 어느 수준에 달해 작가의 역량이 발휘되는 시기이며 전성기이다. 이를테면 『삼대』 삼부작 시기는 염상섭의 중기를 대표한다. 본 논문은 이 작품들을 통해 일제 강점기 경성의 크로노토프를 살펴봄으로써 염상섭 중기문학이 현실과 맺는 관련성을 고찰하고자 하였다. 염상섭 중기소설의 크로노토프 연구는 당대 현실의 구조에 접촉할 가능성을 준다. 첫째, 당대 중요한 사건을 환기하며 그에 대한 역사의식을 보였다. 그가 환기한 조선공산당과 사회주의 의식은 바로 조선인의 최소한의 현실투쟁의 모습이었다. 둘째, 염상섭은 공간 묘사를 통해 강점기 사회를 그리고 있다. 염상섭이 공간성을 통해 포착한 풍속성은 조선인이 살아가는 현실 공간 강점기 경성의 실재였다. 인물들의 주거공간 묘사와 배회하는 거리의 양상, 추정 가능한 현실 공간 등의 설정 등을 통하여 염상섭은 당대 다양한 풍속성을 표현하고 있다.
'The middle period' is the time one reaches a good level in terms of format as well as content to a writer. And this period is when an artist can show their skills, so heyday. Yeom Sang-seop wrote the Three Generations Trilogy (the Three Generations series) at this time. This article looks at the chronotope of Japanese colonial times/Kyeong-sung area through Three Generations Trilogy, and Yeom, Sang Seop's Middlenovels want to consider the relevance and bearing a reality through it. The study on chronotope of Yeom, Sang Seop's Middlenovels gives the possibility of contact with the structure of the contemporary reality. First, Yeom, Sang Seop's Middlenovels ventilation in the contemporary of important events and were history conscious of it. Yeom, Sang Seop’s issue- Chosun Communist Party and the socialist consciousness through this novel was the least of the aspects of the real struggle of the Koreans. Second, Yeom, Sang Seop's Middlenovels in which the occupation and society by depicting space. Yeom, Sang Seop was focused on the reality of the real space, that is, Japanese colonial times / Kyeong-sung area that Koreans live. There figures have been calculated as if walking while actually describing when characters wandering the streets, these descriptions were of great interest and a good representation of Contemporary Culture on rapidly changing space, the Japanese colonial times / Kyeong-sung area.
