21세기 지식기반사회가 도래함에 따라 국가적 차원에서 과학기술의 중요성이 크게 인식되었다. 과학기술문화의 기반시설로서 국민의 과학교육의 역할을 담당하는 과학관은 바람직한 과학기술문화를 정착하고 확산시킬 수 있도록 적극적인 국가차원의 관심과 함께 지원이 요구되고 있다. 현재 국가에서는 과학관 건립에 대한 중요성을 인식하고 과학관 육성사업을 시행하고 있으나, 과학관 건립에 따른 체계적인 사전계획과 건립 이후의 원활한 운영을 위한 사후경영이 제대로 이뤄지지 않은 채 무분별한 육성사업을 시행하고 있다는 문제점이 도출되고 있다. 특히 과학관의 전시디자인 경영에 있어서도 향후 과학관이 지향해야 할 방향성에 대한 전시디자인 활용 및 전시운영활성화를 위한 경영방법 등이 모색되어야 한다. 과학관은 시대의 변화와 수요자의 요구에 빠르게 대응해야한다. 전시물에서부터 전시기법, 전시물, 설명방법까지 전시에 관한 모든 면에 있어서 끊임없이 새로워지는 과학지식을 반영하고 관람객들의 과학적 흥미를 이끌어주어야 한다. 이렇게 하기 위해서는 과학관의 전시디자인 경영 방향이 시각적, 공학적, 공간적 측면에서 다각도로 차별화된 체험형 전시 개발과 이를 아우를 수 있는 종합 엔터테인먼트를 조성하고, 다양한 분야의 전문인력 네트웍을 통한 전시프로그램 개발 등이 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 국립과학관의 전시디자인경영과 더불어 이 모든 것을 행할 수 있도록 충분한 예산 확보가 뒷받침 되어야 하고, 구축 된 후 관리, 운영 및 관람객과의 원활한 소통을 위해 전시 전문 인력 보급 등 융합적인 경영이 이루어져야 한다. 이를 바탕으로 현재 국립과학관의 문제점과 한계를 해결하고 지속적인 발전과 변화를 거듭해야 할 것이다.
