This paper is to study characteristics and development policy of sustainable development in the Nak-dong River. The results are summarized in the followings. The devlopment which did not consider the openness/participation, equity, security/precautionary, polluter pays principle in public affairs results many problems. These include: lack of links with related province and megalopolis in the planning, equity problems related to sand & gravel extractions from the riverbed and dam construction, the shortage of environmental infrastructure, inadequate water quality measures, etc.The measures to solve these problems include: creation of management organization to set up integration plan, sustainable sand & gravel extractions from the riverbed, fortifying the assistance for the residents who live near the Dam construction site, expansion of environmental infrastructure and introduction of integrated assessment system.
