This study examines negation in Korean from diachronic and synchronic points of view. It shows how negation markers are grammaticalized into discourse particles, and how they are lexicalized into lexical items. It also shows that the phonological change has always been involved in the process of grammaticalization and lexicalization; that pre-verbal negation has undergone neither grammaticalization nor lexicalization, while other forms of negation are the result of grammaticalization or lexicalization, as well as phonological change
