오늘날과 같은 지식 기반 정보화 사회에서 문식력의 중요성은 더욱 강조되고 있지만 학생들은 책을 읽지 않아 사회적으로 문제가 되고 있다. 이 논문에서는 지식 기반 정보화 사회에서 문식력이 갖는 의미와 중요성을 살펴보고, 학생들이 책을 읽지 않는 원인을 생태학적 관점에서 검토해 보았다. 그리고 국가 경쟁력 구축 차원에서 주요 선진국들이 독서 환경 구축을 위해 기울이고 있는 정책적 노력들을 살펴봄으로써 이른바 활자 이탈 세대인 우리 청소년들이 책을 읽도록 하기 위해서 공공 도서관 시설 확충과 같은 생태학적 독서 환경 구축을 위한 정책적 노력이 필요함을 주장하였다. 아울러 문식력 신장을 위한 국어교육의 개선 방안으로 교실 안에 생태학적 문식성 환경을 구축하고, 실제적인 맥락 안에서의 읽기와 쓰기 경험을 강화하기 위한 NIE 교육 방법, 읽기 경험 자체를 강조하는 SSR 활동, 독서와 토론 활동과 연계된 쓰기 활동 등이 필요함을 제시하였다.
Even though, literacy in Knowledge Based Society of Information in these days is getting more and more important, the reality of student's lacking in reading is exposed to be a serious social problem. The reason why students don't read a book is mainly related to excessive competitive education and influx of electronic digital culture such as TV, computer internet, video games. To solve these problems and make them to be a active reader, this paper argues the importance of governmental policy about constructing the ecological reading environment such as expansion in public library and etc. The author also suggests direction of improving Korean literacy education as follows: constructing ecological literacy environment in the classroom, using NIE program for boosting reading and writing competence in authentic context, and enhancing writing activity with reading and debating.
