본 연구는 학교폭력의 심각성이 강조되는 우리 교육현장에서 기존의 주입식 예방교육 및 프로그램의 대안으로 2012년 서울시 교육청이 주관하여 서울시내 중학교들을 찾아가며 실행된 학교폭력예방 교육연극 TIE(Theatre in Education) 프로젝트의 배경과 실행 및 성과를 진단하고자 하였다. 우리 교육현장에서 소외되어있는 예술교육, 특히 연극을 활용한 공연형 참여연극 프로그램인 TIE가 지닌 참여적이고 학생 주도적 특성이 학교폭력이라는 지극히 복잡하고 민감한 사회적 이슈를 접근함에 있어 방관자 및 동조자들을 학교폭력의 방어자로 전환시키기 위한 인식 제고에 어떠한 성과와 가능성을 제시하였는가에 주목하였다. 이를 위해 TIE 전문단체인 교육연극연구소 PRAXIS의 <눈을 감은 사람? 눈을 뜬 사람!>의 사례를 중심으로 프로그램의 실행 내용 및 결과를 분석하였다. 또한 이러한 교육연극 TIE 프로그램의 초등 고학년 적용 사례 점검을 통해, 초등교육 현장에 이와 같은 학습자 중심적이고 참여적인 학교폭력 예방프로그램이 절실하고, 급속히 저연령화 되어가는 현실에서 선제적 예방교육이 중요하며, 초등학생들의 정서적 공감능력 향상 및 교사들의 학생지도 효과성이 높다고 판단된다. 이런 측면을 고려할 때, 학교폭력예방 TIE가 초등교육에 시사하는 의미와 효과에 대한 가능성이 크다고 하겠다.
This study aims to examine the background, contents, and results of the TIE for School Violence Prevention program for middle schools, organized by Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education in 2012. Amid growing seriousness of school violence of recent while lacking of arts education on this subject, the study focused on how such a participatory theatrical program can handle the complex social issue and how it can guide young people's perceptions - changing those of 'bystanders' and 'assistants' into those of 'defenders.' Exploring the case of PRAXIS's TIE <Eyes shut? Eyes Wide-pien!>, the study discusses process, meanings, and responses from participating young audiences. Also, by examining the TIE's pilot implementation for upper elementary students, the study argues implications for elementary education: first, leaner-centered, participatory school violence prevention programs incorporated with arts such as TIE showed effectiveness and urgently needed; second, school violence starts at younger ages so the prevention programs are called for an earlier intervention in elementary classroons; third, elementary students are more pertinent to school violence prevention program due to their susceptiblity to emotional empathy, and fourth, techers may function more effective roles in the elementary classroom. The study concludes that the TIE can be an effective and empowering approach for elementary students in dealing with school violence prevention at the early stage.
