본 연구는 전통사회 세시풍속 중 하나인 「단오」를 지역사회 자원을 활용하여 유치원에 적합한 교육활동으로 개발하여 적용하는 과정에 참여하는 유아들의 경험을 질적으로 분석, 참여과정의 특성을 파악하기 위한 목적으로 수행되었다. 연구 참여자는 충북지역 1개 유치원의 만 5세반 2개 학급의 교사 2인과 유아 40명이었다. 연구자들이 구안한 「단오」 풍속 교육활동안을 중심으로 단오시기를 전후로 약 4주간 실시하였다. 자료 수집을 위하여 2개 학급에서 실시한 단오 관련 4가지 주제에 대한 교육활동을 참여관찰하고 비디오 녹화를 하였으며, 수집된 자료는 전사, 분류와 분석, 해석의 과정을 거쳤다. 분석 결과 유아의 활동경험은 첫째, 단오 풍속에 대한 지식 학습하기, 둘째, 단오 관련 주제에 대한 통합교육과 확장활동 경험하기, 셋째, 직접 체험해보는 단오 풍속의 재미, 넷째, 단오 관련 특별활동의 즐거움, 다섯째, 나에게 의미 있는 단오 풍속, 여섯째, 활동결과로 다양한 목표 달성하기, 일곱째, 이상한 옛날 풍속 알기였다. 이러한 결과로 초여름 세시풍속 단오의 유치원 교육활동 적용은 전통문화의 토대 위에 직접 체험 기회가 제공될 때 유아에게 의미 있게 수용될 수 있음을 알 수 있다.


The purpose of this study was to grasp the characteristics of 5 year old children's experiences in 「Dano」activity at public kindergarten. The activities for practicing four themes of「Dano」custom were developed by the researchers and two class teachers. A participant observation was conducted in two classrooms during「Dano」activity in June. Field notes and videotapes obtained through observation were analyzed through four steps. The findings are as follows: First, children experienced「Dano」activities by learning knowledge about it. Second, children experienced the extended and the integrated activities that were related with each theme. Third, children had a lot of fun in their participant activities. Forth, children had pleasures participating in the special activities with volunteers' service and their field trips. Fifth, children took interests in many folk customs. Sixth, children were asked to have much output. Lastly, children experienced novel folk customs in「Dano」festival. The study concluded that activities of「Dano」could be meaningful under the condition of children's active participations.
