Lee Dami. 2004. 2. 29. Second Language Acquisition: Innate Linguistic Knowledge or Interaction? Bilingual Research 24, 177-193. This paper examines second language acquisition from two different perspectives: A mentalist perspective and an interactionist perspective. The mentalist theory claims that the primary driving force behind L2 acquisition is innate linguistic knowledge, called Universal Grammar. The interactionist theory, on the other hand, holds that interaction plays a major role in creating the conditions in which L2 acquisition can take place. Given that each of them emphasizes a different aspect of L2 acquisition, these two theories are considered to be complimentary rather than contradictory.
