본 연구는 조선시대에 살았던 여중군자 장계향의 생애를 고찰하고 그 삶을 일반인들에게 친밀하게 전달하기 위한 만화를 어떤 방식으로 기획하는 것이 바람직한가에 대하여 살펴보았다. 본 연구의 목적은 우리나라 여성 인물 중에서 특수한 신분이 아닌 일반 여인의 삶을 조명하고 그 여인의 삶 속에서 여성 지도자의 행적을 찾아보고 그 행적을 문화콘텐츠의 하나인 만화로 기획하는 방식을 정립하는 것이다. 구체적으로 본 연구는 역사 기록과 선행연구 자료를 바탕으로 정치적⦁시대적 상황과 장계향의 삶의 연계점을 찾았으며, 고찰된 장계향의 삶을 만화로 각색하기 위해 필요한 선과 악의 대립 플롯 구성, 만화캐릭터와 이미지 연출 방법과 만화의 표현방식을 정립하기 위한 각색의 방향성을 제시하였다. 당시 시대적 상황과 연계한 장계향 만화기획의 큰 흐름을 살펴보면 다음과 같다. 장계향의 출생을 만화적 상상력으로 충무공 이순신 장군의 죽음과 연계시키면 당시의 정치적 시대상황을 독자들은 쉽게 이해할 수 있다. 어린 시절 장계향의 모습은 총명한 무남독녀로 학문적 소양이 있었지만 ‘남성중심의 조선사회’가 제한한 여성상으로 학문과 거리를 두고 병약한 어머니를 대신하여 살림을 책임지는 캐릭터로 그려지는데, 이런 장계향의 모습에서 독자들은 안타까움과 ‘남성중심의 조선사회’에 대한 의문을 품는다. 붕당정치와 사림으로 상징되는 세력다툼으로 학문적 소양과 관계없이 과거시험에 낙방하는 아버지의 제자와 혼인하고 전처가 남긴 아이들을 포함하여 10명의 자녀를 훌륭하게 키우는 교육자 장계향의 모습과 전쟁과 가족의 죽음 등의 시련 속에서도 주변 사람들을 구휼하는 여중군자 장계향의 모습에서 독자들은 감동과 경외감을 느낀다. 가족과 사회의 구성원으로 부여된 모든 일들을 훌륭하게 이행하고 자신만의 시간을 가지게 되자 우리나라 최초의 한글요리서 『음식디미방』을 집필한 장계향의 지치지 않는 열정을 통해 독자들은 어린 시절 포기하였던 꿈들을 다시 한번 생각해 본다. 장계향의 삶을 만화로 각색하면 영화, 드라마, 뮤지컬 등과 같은 다양한 문화콘텐츠로 변환하는 것이 용이한데, 대중이 몰입할 수 있는 문화콘텐츠가 되기 위해서는 일정 부분의 각색이 필요하다. 첫 째, 이야기의 전개를 위해서 선과 악의 대립 구도를 설정하는 것이 독자의 몰입을 유도하기 쉬운데, 장계향의 이야기에서는 ‘남성중심의 조선사회’와 같은 추상적인 악한 대상을 설정하는 것이 적절하다. 둘 째, 섬세하고 구체적인 표현을 위해 6등신의 캐릭터 이미지를 기획하고 역사 기록에서 확인할 수 없는 배경미지도 만화 창작자의 유추해석을 통해서 구체화하여야 한다. 셋 째, 장계향의 심리상태와 시대적 상황을 잘 묘사하기 위해서는 전지전능적 작가시점에서 이야기를 전개하는 것이 바람직하다. 넷 째, 역사적 사실을 만화로 구성하는 과정에서 단순화, 압축, 제거 뿐만 아니라 새로운 에피소드 추가와 줄거리의 변화를 통한 각색과정이 필요하다. 본 연구는 장계향이라는 여성 지도자의 삶을 고찰하고 그 삶을 만화로 기획하는 방식을 제시함으로써 역사 속 실존 인물을 만화 주인공으로 활용할 때의 기획 방향성을 제시하였다. 이 연구를 통해 대중에게 더 흥미로운 문화콘텐츠가 되기 위하여 역사 속 실존 인물에 어떤 만화적 상상력을 불어 넣을 것인지와 캐릭터 및 배경이미지의 각색의 필요성을 논의하였다. 앞으로 이런 방식이 많이 활용되면 더 많은 역사 속 인물의 삶이 더 많은 일반 대중에게 친근하게 다가갈 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

This study attempts to contemplate the life of Chang-Kye-Hyang, virtuous woman, to find out suitable planning directions for developing comics which can be friendly delivered to public. The objectives of this study are to contemplate the life of one woman who was not belong to royal family and to analyse activities of her leadership and to establish the development planning model of comics. Based on the historical records and previous studies, this study finds related connection between political situation and her personal life. Also, this study suggests direction of comics dramatization to set up antagonism plot between gool and evil, directing method of comic characters and images and expression mode of comics. This study examines the story plot of Chang-Kye-Hyang comics related to political and social situation at that time. The death of admiral Yi Sun-Shin can be related to the birth of Chang-Kye-Hyang and through this relationship, readers can understand the historial background of that time easily. The only daughter Chagn-Kye-Hayng was very wise and good at a filed of study including literature. But 'Man oriented Chosun' restricted women from studies and she took charge of house works instead. Readers are inconvenience and have doubt about the society of 'Man oriented Chosun'. Because of some faction politicians and confucian scholars, classical scholars could not pass the state examination. One of classical scholars was her father's student and Chang-Kye-Hyang married to him by father's advise. She educated ten children including two children from ex-wife who died earlier. After carrying out all responsibilities and duties of her role expected from 'Man oriented Chosun', she wrote 『Umsikdimibang』,which is recored as the first Korean written food recipe, when she was 73 years old. It reminds readers the dream of childhood. Dramatized Comics will be easily converted to other cultural contents, such as movie, drama and musical. For Chang-Kye-Hyang comics, dramatization is also needed for readers to immerse themselves in the comics. First, antagonism of good and devil plot, such as Chang-Kye-Hyang is good and 'Man oriented Chosun' is not good, is needed. Second, life-size character and background image including props should be expressed in details through analogical interpretation of the cartoonist for delicate visualization . Third, the omniscient viewpoint is suggested to describe mental state fo Chang-Kye-Hyang and state affairs at that time. Forth, simplification, compression, elimination as well as addition and plot changes are needed for better dramatization. The study suggests dramatization direction of comics development when a historical character is adapted as a heroine for comics after contemplating a lifetime of Chang-Kye-Hyang, virtuous woman. The study confirmed the possibility of developing cultural contents of historical human beings if proper dramatization is adapted with creative idea. More historical human beings are expected to be introduced to public and loved by them if proper dramatization is adapted.
