This paper aims to explore North Korean plays published in the NK’s major arts magazine Joseon Yesul so as to discover the key code of NK plays of the 1990s starting in 1994. With a strong determination to revolutionize its plays for the second time early in the 1990s,NK completed Dear Leader-type plays such as <Following the Flag of Victory >(1992) and <Wish>(1994). Early in the 1990s, a thaw in the cold war system appears to have influenced the play world as well, because sensibilities were further emphasized in works. In <Following the Flag of Victory>, Kim Il-sung was featured as not just the leader who led war to victory. Kim Il-sung was a humanitarian character who was described as the father of the people and the father of two siblings. Following the first play revolution in the 1970s, the play community revolutionized plays in the 1990s; the focus of plays shifted from magnificence to spectacles, sensibilities, and humanitarianism. However, the death of Kim Il-sung in 1994 temporarily suspended the new trend of the NK drama world. Natural disasters and food shortage temporarily also suspended the creation of works. This was because NK’s supreme agenda were to overcome the crisis and unify the people. To that end, one year after Kim Il-sung died, NK held laughter contests. Laughter and parodies were the best choice for NK to choose amid a national crisis. The two elements were a circuit by which to boost the people’s spontaneity and production capacity, and to satirize South Korea and thus vent the people’s complaints. Soon after, the NK regime changed to come under the control of Kim Jong-il, when the play circle had to reform itself again. With a new sunrise, light laughter was not suitable. NK needed a certain fresh code. That was converged into impression. Light comedies, such as <Promise>(1996), <Bliss>(1997), <A Letter>(1998), and <Comrade>(1999) were, according to NK’s comments, perfect plays that implemented solemn themes. The circuit of laughter was also changed. Previously, from actors’ clumsy physical movements, laughter was triggered, but in light comedies, laughter was elicited among audiences through serious comedian characters’ confrontation with light orthodox characters, through relations between characters, and through a misunderstanding of love. Although emphasis of emotional and humanitarian aspects prevalent in 1994did not completely disappear, laughter and impression were firmly settled as a major code of the play circle from the middle of the 1990s. As such, the key code of NK’s plays, which started with spectacles and sensibilities in the 1990s, was transformed into laughter and parodies from 1994, whether voluntarily or involuntarily. Afterwards, the key code ended with impression and laughter. This impression and laughter code was closely linked to NK’s plays and films in the 2000s.
