Difference in Incidence Rate of Low Birth Weight among the Parental Social Strata in KoreaSang-Yi LeeSeong-Chul HongCollege of Medicine, Cheju National UniversityPrevious studies have demonstrated associations between incidence rate of low birth weight and some factors including maternal age, birth order and gestational age. However, no one knows whether there is a significant relationship between incidence rate of low birth weight and social strata in Korea when major independent variables influencing incidence rate of low birth weight are controlled. The purpose of this study is to find out whether any association exists and, if any, how significant it is between incidence rate of low birth weight and social strata in Korea. The study population is all live births registered in Korean birth registration in 2001. Incidence rate of low birth weight was analysed by major independent variables. Main results were identical with previous studies. In turn, multiple logistic regression analysis showed that there was a difference of the risk for low birth weight among social strata in Korea. The risk for low birth weight of social class Ⅴ was significantly higher than that of social class Ⅰ(odds ratio : 1.79) after adjustment for major independent variables including maternal age and birth order. That means there is an original and fundamental inequality in the incidence of low birth weight and health outcomes of later lifetime.
