이 글에서는 한국 서사민요와 영미 발라드 중 수수께끼 노래의 양상과 의미를 구애의 노래를 중심으로 비교 고찰하였다. 한국 서사민요와 영미 발라드 중 구애(청혼)의 의사나 이에 대한 승인 또는 거부를 수수께끼를 통해 나타내는 노래로는 Child #1 <Riddles Wisely Expounded(현명하게 푼 수수께끼)>, Child #46 <Captain Wedderburn's Courtship(웨더번 경의 청혼)>과 <댕기 노래>, <줌치 노래> 등을 들 수 있다. 이들 구애의 노래에 나타난 수수께끼는 크게 두 가지 양상으로 나타난다. 하나는 구애자(제시자)와 상대자(해결자)의 대결로 이루어지는 경우이고 다른 하나는 구애자의 일방적 제시로 이루어지는 경우이다. 전자의 경우는 영미 발라드에서 주로 나타나고 후자의 경우는 한국 서사민요에서 주로 나타난다. 영미 발라드에서는 배우자의 자격을 본격적인 수수께끼를 통해 직접적으로 가늠하는 데 비해, 한국 서사민요에서는 구애(청혼)의 의사를 은유나 환유 등 암시적 표현을 통해 넌지시 건넨다. 영미 사회에서는 구애(청혼)자가 모두 남자로 나타나나, 이를 승낙하거나 거부하는 데 있어 상대자인 여자가 수수께끼를 통해 주체적으로 대응하고 있음을 보여준다. 이에 비해 한국 서사민요에서는 남자 구애(청혼)자의 암시적 제시를 여자 상대자가 거부하기는 하나 벗어날 수 없는 상황을 보여주기도 하고(댕기 노래), 여자가 구애(청혼)자가 되어 영웅을 낳을 포부를 드러내기는 하나 대부분 받아들여지지 않는 상황을 보여주기도 한다(줌치 노래). 이러한 구애의 노래 속 수수께끼의 양상은 남녀 간의 연애와 혼인이 자유롭지 않았던 근대 이전 두 사회의 현실과 함께, 이로부터 벗어나 배우자 선택의 자유와 주체적 의지를 꿈꾸었던 기층 여성들의 의식을 보여준다.
This paper investigated the meaning and aspects of riddle in the courtship songs through the comparison of the Korean narrative songs and the Anglo-American ballads. The courtship songs analysed in this paper are Danggi(a pigtail ribbon) Song, Jumchi(pouch) Song, Child #1. Riddles Wisely Expounded, Child #46. Captain Wedderburn's Courtship. I surveyed them through dividing those songs into two categories–the competition between wooer and counterpart, wooer’s one sided presentation. The one is constituted with confrontation of the poser and matcher, the other is suggested with the metaphor and paradoxes by the poser. The Korean narrative songs and the Anglo-American ballads use riddles for the means of courtship and refusal. These songs show that the condition of spouse is not based on the outward appearance, the social position, and the financial power, but on the wisdom. While the Anglo-American ballads are formed with the competition between wooer and counterpart, the Korean Narrative songs are formed with the wooer’s one sided presentation. Contrary to that the women in the Anglo-American ballads confirm their opinion as the matcher of riddles or the poser of the secondary riddles, the women in the Korean narrative songs don’t express their opinion subjectively. However, Korean <Jumchi(Pouch) Song> is very remarkable because the woman searches her bridegroom as a subject. These courtship songs show the social reality of marriage and consciousness of the lower women. The study of Korean narrative songs, moreover, the comparison between Korean narrative songs and Anglo-American ballads have been not performed sufficiently. I wish that this study would be the step-stone of the expansion of the comparative study of the Korean narrative songs and the Anglo-American ballads.
