1930년대 박태원과 이상의 자작 삽화에서 주목할 만한 특징은 그림 공간 속에 빈번하게 등장하는 문자의 양면적 성격이다. 기본적으로 이들의 삽화에서 문자는 리얼리티에 대한 새로운 감수성을 일깨우고, 근대적 일상 공간의 체험을 구체화함으로써 시공간에 대한 근대적 인식의 준거를 제공한다. 그러나 이와는 전혀 다른 성격의 문자들이 박태원와 이상의 삽화 속에 존재한다. 어떤 지시 대상도 찾을 수 없으며, 어떤 의미로도 환원되지 않는, 그러므로 오직 텅 빈 기표로 존재하는 문자들이 바로 그것이다. 이러한 문자들은 삽화면 안에서 단순한 유희의 대상물이나 추상적인 이미지처럼 나타나면서, 독자들의 개인적인 읽기 체험 속에서만 잠깐씩 의미를 만들어낸다. 본고의 관점에서 본다면, 이처럼 분열적인 문자에 대한 체험이야말로 1930년대 문학예술의 특징을 반영하는 중요한 지점이다. 문자에 의한 제도화는 근대적 인간의 삶을 가능하게 하는 토대를 제공하지만, 동시에 그들의 사유를 구속한다는 점에서 양가적이다. 따라서 이 시기 예술이 보여주는 문자에 대한 관심은 지극히 자연스럽다. 박태원과 이상의 삽화에서 문자는 단순한 풍경의 일부가 아니라, 동시대 예술이 문자에 대해 견지하고 있었던 이중적인 태도를 상징적으로 보여준다. 근대를 지배하는 제도와 질서의 동력으로서 문자의 힘에 의지하면서도, 다른 한편 그러한 문자의 지배로부터 벗어나려는 시도가 바로 이들의 삽화를 구성하는 중요한 모티프이기 때문이다.
This thesis purposed to reveal the relation of the illustration and the 1930's novels written and illustrated by Park Tae-won and Lee Sang. It is important to study 'the written language' drawn in their illustrations, because it shows Park's and Lee's artistic viewpoints. The written language(the text) in the illustration(the image) has two different meanings in the 1930's literature and arts. First, it means the modern change that the written language(text) dominates the picture(image). It was unusual that the illustration contained the text in 1910∼20's but it's changed by Park's and Lee's works in 1930's that a modern culture has been established. We know the writing system is the important way how the modern culture can settle down. The written language in the 1930's illustration represents the very modern change from the period of the image to the text. But sometimes the written language in Park's and Lee's pictures means the escape attempt from the modern letter-centered culture. Their works try to degrade or deconstruct letters in their illustrations. For instance, Park's illustrations play letters or articles to enjoy reading and Lee's use calligraphy or typography for an enjoyment. Eventually their work intend their readers to read letters freely and the authority of the written language fall and it is just the method to read for a joy in the course of that.
