This Study analyzes the economic cooperation between German and Soviet through "neue Ostpolitik". "neue Ostpolitik" could not succeed without Free Democrats' support. Free Democrats and business had been interested in eastern trade(Osthandel) and easing tension. Specially, Soviet had raw material like natural gas and oil while west Germany had high technology and financial power. During the 1960-70's, Soviet had faced a very serious economic situation, and Soviet economy needed imports from western technology and equipments. this study analyzed German- Soviet political trade agreement in the context of detent. Economic cooperation with Soviet helped the propelling "neue Ostpolitik", and detente through status quo in Germany was accomplished. This study analyzed the process of economic cooperation with Soviet and the effects to the "neue Ostpolitik". "neue Ostpolitik" could be promoted only in Superpower's Detent. Superpower's detente made it possible for West Germany to trade with Soviet. This study saw the German-Soviet economic cooperation in the context of status quo, peace settlement through status quo policy not reunification policy. so, neue Ostpolitik was not reunification policy but dividing policy. German-Soviet economic cooperation could be promoted and succeed through dividing policy like "neue Ostpolitik:". We need to realize the this essence that "neue Ostpolitik" was not reunification policy, and the German-Soviet trade missions could be enabled because West Germany renounced the reunification practically, so detente between Germany and Soviet was enabled.
