상업자본가, 군인, 관료, 교원, 지주, 하층 노동자, 무직자 등 다종다양한 형태로 존재한 재조일본인 가운데, 상업자본가들은 일찍부터 조선의 상품가치성에 주목하였다. 이들에게 ‘미개척지’ 조선은 기회의 땅으로서 성공을 보장하는 곳이었다. 일본의 한국지배체제는 상업자본가의 진출을 통해서 그 물적 토대가 완성되었다고 말할 수 있을 정도였다. 그중에서도 도미타 기사쿠[富田儀作]라는 상업자본가는 진남포의 ‘지역적 특수성’을 이용하여 자본을 축적해간 대표적인 식민자였다. 진남포는 부산, 원산, 인천보다 훨씬 늦은 1897년 목포와 함께 개항된 곳이다. 대동강 하류의 한적한 시골 마을에 불과했던 이곳은, 개항 전에는 일본인들이 크게 주목하지 않았던 곳이었지만, 개항 이후에는 개발이 기대되는 곳이었기에 일본인들이 몰려왔다. 도미타 또한 맨손으로 인천으로 도항하여 진남포 개항 이후 이 지역으로 이주한 인물이었다. 그는 진남포에 거점을 두고 본격적으로 광산업에 종사하면서 농업, 금융업 등 다방면으로 사업을 확장하였다. 진남포의 대표적 식민자였던 도미타는 겉으로는 ‘차별’과 ‘편견’을 가지지 않은 ‘조선의 개발자’이자 ‘공로자’, ‘선량한’ 식민자를 자처했다. 그러나 그의 조선ㆍ조선인에 대한 인식 속에는, 애써 숨기고자 했지만 곳곳에서 노골적으로 드러난 특권의식과 조선인에 대한 우월의식이 내재해 있었다.
Japanese Settlers in Colonial Korea existed in various forms, for example commercial capitalists, soldiers, bureaucrats, teachers, the lower class workers and the unemployed. Among them, the commercial capitalists focused on the commercial value of Korea. The Colonial Korea had been a for them ‘Undeveloped land’ that was the place to guarantee as the land of opportunity for a success. Japan dominated regime in Korea was enough to say that the physical foundation has been completed through the advancement of commercial capitalists. For example, Tomita Kisaku[富田儀作] who was a commercial capitalists in Jinnampo[진남포] that he was using the regional peculiarities of there. And he accumulated capital and became a typical colonizer. Jinnampo was open a port in 1897, much later than Wonsan, Busan, Incheon. However, in front of the open this port, the Japanese Settlers in Korea had just not much attention. But, in the subsequent open a port, the Japanese Settlers have been gathered because the development was expected. Tomita also came with bare hands to Incheon in korea, and since the opening of Jinnampo, he emigrated here. At first, He was based in Jinnampo, earnest engaged in mining. And by extension, he extended of the many fields in business to agriculture, financial industry, etc. Tomita was a typical colonizer of Jinnampo. To ostensibly, he didn’t have ‘a discrimination’ and ‘a prejudice’ and he saw himself as ‘the Korean developer’, ‘contributor’, and ‘a good colonizer’. However, some of the perception of his Korea- Korean, he wanted to hide, but, a privilege consciousness that appeared blatant in everywhere, and superiority consciousness of Koreans had been internalized.
