This paper challenges to the consensus of the old definitions and categories of Gnosticism before Nag Hammad discovery and suggests some practical way how approach to define a concept of Gno- sticism and how to categorize gnostic literature. As Karen L. King’s suggestion, the old consensus were used in terms of anti-Catholic Protestant polemic, anti-Judaism and colonial ideology. Furthermore, not only the origin of gnostic literature’s environment are very different but also the contents of the gnostic literature are not unity at all. This paper shows some examples which is not agree old consensus of the definition of gnosticism through uncovers and compares the similarities and differences among some major traditional gnostic literature. In conclusion, the old definition of gnosticism should be reconsidered without orthodoxy-heretic polemic and dogmatic theology, and the category of gnosticism should be reshaped in detail.
