본 논문에서 필자는 이병덕의 “허구적 이름에 대한 밀주의 이론과 추론주의 의미론”에 대해 반론을 제시한다. 이를 위해 필자는 허구적 이름과 관련한 문제점들을 필자 나름대로 재구성하여, 이 문제들과 관련하여 보다 자세한 보완 설명과 해결책 제시가 필요하다는 것을 보이고, 또한 이병덕이 월튼에 대해 제기했던 반론이 그 자신의 입장에도 역시 적용됨을 보인다. 필자는 이병덕이 제시한 추론주의적 설명은 좀더 많은 설명과 정당화가 필요한 아직은 불완전한 설명으로서, 허구적 이름에 대한 가장 적절한 의미론을 제시한다는 그의 결론을 받아들일 수 없다고 결론내린다.
In this paper, I raise objections to Lee’s “Millian Theories of Fictional Terms and Inferential Semantics”. To do this, I reconstruct the problems about fictional names (empty names), and I maintain that we need to hear more from Lee with respect to these, and that his own objection to Walton also applies to his theory as well. I conclude that without more explanations and justification from Lee, we cannot accept his claim that his inferential semantics provides the most satisfactory semantics for fictional names.
