뉴욕의 플러싱-베이사이드(Flushing-Bayside) 지역에 형성된 한인타운은 미 동부에서 가장 큰 한인타운이며 미국에서 LA 코리아 타운 다음으로 큰 한인타운이다. 이 논문은 플러싱-베이사이드 한인타운을 자세히 소개하는데 다음의 세 가지를 중점적으로 검토하고자 한다. 첫째는 플러싱 지역에서 한인타운이 언제 어떻게 시작되었는가를 검토하고 플러싱-베이사이드 지역의 인구 분포를 설명한다. 둘째는 플러싱-베이사이드 지역의 한인 상업 지역의 여러 한인 가게들을 종목별로 검토한다. 마지막으로 플러싱 지역에서 매일 일어나는 여러 가지 한국 문화 행사와 한인 모임을 자세히 검토한다. 이 논문에 쓰여진 자료는 미국 인구 조사국 통계, 두 저자가 20여년 동안 이 지역을 보아 온 참여 관찰 및 2007년 뉴욕 중앙일보사가 발행한 한인 업소록 등이다.
The Flushing-Bayside Koreatown is the largest Koreatown in the East Coast and the second largest Koreatown in the United States, next to Koreatown in Los Angeles. This paper examines the Flushing-Bayside Koreatown with focus on the following three areas. First, it examines the origin of the Koretown and demographical characteristics in the Flushing-Bayside area. Second, it examines major types of Korean businesses in the Flushing-Bayside Korean business district. Finally, this paper examines various Korean cultural and social events that occur every day in the Flushing Koreatown.
