언어 자료는 기존 언어 이론의 검증 수단, 또는 새로운 이론의구축 수단으로 사용된다. 그러나 지금까지 대부분의 국어 자료는 기존 이론의 틀을 검증하는 수단으로 이용되어 왔으며 국어에 맞는 새로운 이론을 구축하는데 이용되지 못했다. 특히 이 과정에서 방언 자료의 가치는표준어보다 상대적으로 폭넓게 검토되지 못했다. 이 글에서는 방언 자료가 보여주는 다양한 어휘적 형태를 대상으로 이들이 기존 이론과 상충되는 현상을 찾고 이를 통하여 새로운 이론적 설명의 필요성과 표시 방식, 그리고 실질적인 이용 방식 등에 대해 살폈다. 특히 생성론적 이론이 가지는 기저형의 선정과 규칙의 일반화 등과 같은 핵심적인 개념들이 방언 자료에 대해서 어떠한 반응을 보이며, 이러한 관점에서 이들 이론적 장치에 대한 새로운 설명 방식 및 표시 방식의 필요성을 제기하였다. 방언 자료는 채집을 통한 정적인 자료로서의 기능만을 가져서는 안 된다. 기존의 언어 이론을 수정하거나 발전시키는데 직접적으로 사용되어 야 하며, 더 나아가 국어에 맞는 새로운 언어 이론을 개발하는 과정에서 기초적인 자료로서의 가치를 가져야 하는 것이다.
The purpose is to search linguistical value of dialect materials. Phonology Linguistic materials have been used theoretical ways from the viewpoint of generative phonology. Thus, they have been sidestepped data of dialects with various surface forms if possible. Most of Dialects have multiple surface forms. These forms are a bit short of phonological regularity. And on this scene, it is difficult to set up a single underlying form and involved rules. These mean witch dialect materials have been recognized exceptional beings in their theoretical system until now. But dialect materials have up to much worth theoretically. Now a new approach of dialect materials will have a new understanding for to analyse morphemes, to create underlying forms, to set up rules, stratums and derivation, etc. At this point, the discussion on the future of dialect materials will have to be more wider.
