이 논문은 프랑스 작가 모파상의 단편 소설을 우리말로 옮긴 두종의 번역 텍스트에 대한 다각적인 비교 연구이다. 논의된 내용은 다음과같다. 첫째, 김소월의 번역(1923)은 프랑스어 원전에서 옮긴 직접번역인 반면, 최재서의 번역(1934)은 영어 번역에서 옮긴 중역으로 판단된다. 둘째, 김소월의 번역(1923)은 맞춤법과 띄어쓰기 등에서 현재의 정서법과 사뭇 다른 양상을 보이는데, 이는 이 번역이 발표된 연대가 <한글맞춤법 통일안>이 공포된 1933년 이전이라는 점에 기인한다. 이에 비해 최재서의 번역(1934)은 이러한 측면에서 <통일안>을 어느 정도 따른 모습을보인다. 셋째, 비교문체론에 입각해서 두 번역을 비교한 결과, 김소월의 번역(1923)에서는 직접번역(축어역)과 간접번역(전위, 변조)의 비율이 114 대80으로, 최재서의 번역(1934)에서는 172 대 22로 나타났다. 넷째, 문화 관련 어휘의 번역 경향을 일별해 보면, 김소월(1923)에서는 대체로 자국화 경향이 두드러진 반면, 최재서(1934)에서는 이국화 경향이나타났다. 다섯째, 김소월의 번역(1923)에는 의성어와 의태어를 위주로 한 고유어가 다량으로 쓰이고 있는 반면, 최재서의 번역(1934)에는 영어를 직역한번역투 표현이 두드러지게 나타났다.
The purpose of this paper is a comparison between the two Korean translations from a French short story, L'odyssée d'une fille written by Guy de Maupassant. This paper marks out the five major features distinguishing Kim Sowol's translation from Choi Jaeseo's translation:First, Kim's translation(1923) is thought of as the direct translation from the original French text, while Choi's translation(1934) as the indirect translation from an English translation of the French text. Second, Kim's translation(1923) shows somewhat different aspects from the current Korean orthography, for the translation appeared before the Unification Rule of Korean Orthography in 1933. On the contrary Choi's translation(1934) shows following the 1933 Orthographic system. Third, the two Korean translations differ in the matter of translation stylistics as suggested by Vinay and Darbelnet's study: the ratio of direct translation(word-toword)to indirect translation(transposition, modulation) in Kim's translation(1923) is 114 : 80, while the ratio in Choi's(1934) is 172 : 22. Fourth, in the matter of cultural vocabulary, Kim's translation(1923) tends to domesticate foreign cultural words, whereas Choi's(1934) translation tends to foreignize them. Fifth, Kim's translation(1923) conveys a lot of Korean indigenous words including onomatopoetic and mimetic ones, and Choi's translation(1934) already introduces the translationese expressions directly translated from English text.
