This manuscript aimed at identifying the formation processes of ‘아’ combined forms that appeared variously and diversely appeared in medieval Korean and at clearly defining their meanings and functions. First, we examined the use of ‘아’, which appeared commonly in ‘아’combined form, as the word basis since 15th century through the relationship with ‘아모’, ‘아마’, ‘아므’. And by comparing the formation processes and functions of ‘아리’ and ‘아라’, which are the frequently represented forms among ‘아’combined forms with ‘이리/이러’, ‘저리/저러’, ‘그리/그러’, which have similar structures and forms, we analyzed ‘아리’ and ‘아라’ as ‘아 + -리’ and ‘아+ -라’. And the outcomes that we confirmed through the comparison and the analysis are as follows. ‘아리’ which is combined with ‘-리’ possesses [dynamics];in contrast, ‘아라' which is combined with ‘-라’ possesses [stativity]. Lastly, we ascertained that all the other ‘아’ combined forms except for ‘아리’ and ‘아라’are originated from the reduced forms of 아리-다’ and ‘아라-다’ and classified them as ‘아리-다’ types and ‘아라-다’ types by examining the functions of each word. However, we identified that considering the characteristics of the reduced forms of ‘그리-하다’ and ‘그러-하다’ of the present era, as the original forms of the three forms - ‘아례, 아라니, 아란’ - cannot be precisely deciphered, they should be figured out from the meaning and the function shown in contexts.
