본 연구는 홈스쿨링과 Charlotte Mason 교육사상의 고찰을 통해 홈스쿨링의 사상적 기반으로서의 Charlotte Mason 교육사상의 의미를 파악해보고자 하였다. 홈스쿨링은 부모들이 직접 교사가 되어 가정에서 자녀들을 가르치는 것으로써 자기 주도적 학습, 개인의 특성과 개성을 존중하는 교육, 삶에 기반을 둔 교육 등을 추구하고 있다. 즉 궁극적인 목적은 올바른 교육으로의 도달이다. Charlotte Mason(1842∼1923)은 『가정교육』을 비롯한 여러 책들을 저술하고 학교를 설립하는 등 자신의 교육사상과 방법을 알리는데 그치지 않고 실행을 통해 교육의 본질을 되찾고자 하면서 일생을 아이들과 부모를 위한 교육에 전념한 영국의 교육 사상가다. 그녀의 교육사상의 핵심은 아이들의 본성, 삶, 관계, 그리고 의지에 기초한 교육으로 정리된다. Charlotte Mason의 교육사상을 홈스쿨링의 사상적 기반으로 볼 수 있는 이유는, 그녀의 교육 기반이 가정에 있고 부모를 비롯한 성인의 역할에 초점을 두고 있으며, 아이들이 자기 주도적인 학습을 할 수 있도록 해주기 때문이다. 따라서 Charlotte Mason의 교육사상을 통해 홈스쿨링에서 기억할 것은 교육의 주체는 성인이 아닌 아이들이고 교육의 본질은 가정에서 비롯된다는 사실이다.
This study is conducted to look into through home schooling and a review of education thought of Charlotte Mason, and the meaning an ideological foundation of home schooling. Home schooling means parents teach children at home, and it is seeking self-education, to respect the individual's characteristics and personality education, education based on life. That is the ultimately to reach the right education. Charlotte Mason(1842∼1923) was devoted to education for children and parent who wrote many books including Home education and built a school to regain the essence of education by spreading her thought of education and the methods and putting it into act. The core of her educational ideas are by nature, life, relation and based education will. The reason why her thought of education seems to be an educational foundation of home schooling is that it made children study by themselves. Therefore, it is important that education is based on not only adults but children, and the essence of education is originated from home.
