“어떻게 회의주의를 근절할 것인가?”하는 물음은 버클리 철학의 가장 핵심적 주제라고 할 수 있다. 버클리가 회의주의의 위력을 알아챈 것은 당대의 피론주의자였던 벨을 통해서였다. 로크에 대한 벨의 비판을 보면서, 버클리는 마음 밖의 대상에 집착하는 모든 철학은 회의주의의 희생양이 될 수밖에 없다는 것을 깨달았다. 버클리는 회의주의를 성립시키는 기본 원리들에 대한 논박을 수행하면서 회의주의자들이 제기한 물음이 사이비 물음이라는 것을 밝혀내었다고 생각하였다. 그리고 그는 우리의 지각에 기초하여 새롭고 확실한 지식을 정초했다고 믿었다. 그러나 이런 그의 비유물론은 회의주의자들의 거센 저항에 부딪쳤다. 그래서 그는 모든 회의적 반론들을 단 한 번에 잠재울 전가(傳家)의 보도(寶刀)를 꺼내 들었는데, 그것은 영원히 깨어 있는 신이었다. 그러나 신을 입증하기 위해 직관과 반성과 추론의 영역으로 들어서자 그는 또다시 수세에 몰리게 되었다. 신을 입증하기 위해 추론적 논증을 구사하는 영역이야말로 고대 회의주의자들의 홈-그라운드였기 때문이다. 버클리는 추론의 영역으로 들어서기를 꺼렸지만 회의주의자의 공세를 막아내기 위해 이 세계로 뛰어들 수밖에 없었다. 그러나 그가 모든 것을 해결하고자 몸을 피했던 그곳이 바로 회의주의자들이 창궐하는 본거지였다. 회의주의를 극복하고자 했던 버클리의 기획은 수포로 돌아갔다. 그리고 이렇게 참담한 결과를 빚은 원인은 고대 회의주의자들이 고안해내었고, 데카르트가 원용했던 악마의 가설이었다고 할 수 있다. 버클리의 작업을 통해 흄과 칸트는 회의주의의 문제의 심각성을 목격하게 되었고, 다른 해결 방안을 찾지 않으면 안 되었다.

Berkeley recognized a power of scepticism by help of Bayle who was a representative of the ancient pyrrhonism in the modern philosophical history. Seeing Bayle’s criticism of Locke, Berkeley got an insight that all kinds of philosophies searching for an objective reality outside mind had to be a victim of scepticism. How we can eradicate scepticism? This was the central issue that captivated young Berkeley. He was trying to refute the main (four) principles which he thought lead to scepticism. He was so confident to disclose a trick sceptics had played for a long time and to establish a new certain knowledge based on our perception. Sceptics began to attack and demolish an immaterialism citadel as soon as Berkeley was sure that it was invincible. It was danger of falling to the enemy. So He could not help but appeal to the infinite mind (God) staying awake through all eternity. But this is not the end of a problem but the beginning of real difficult trouble. To demonstrate the existence of God he was forced to go into the sphere of inference which had been the typical home ground of sceptics. It was an omnipotent demon hypothesis invented by ancient sceptics and used by Descartes that dealt Berkeley a mortal blow. Berkeley finally failed to refute scepticism, rather sceptics just swallowed Berkely. Berkeley’s defeat made Hume and Kant find another way to overcome scepticism.
