강유위의 『대동서』(大同書)에는 유교사상뿐만 아니라, 도가,불교, 심지어 서방사상까지 포괄하고 있다. 그는 인류사회발전을 거란세(據亂世), 승평세(昇平世), 대동세(大同世)로 발전하는 역사결정론(a historical determinism)을 굳게 믿었다. 그리고 대동세에는 국가나 가족에의한 차별이 없다고 말한다. 강유위는 인간은 모두 비참함보다는 행복을 추구하며, 모두가 만족하는 세상이 대동세라고 말한다. “남의 고통을 차마 견디지 못하는 마음”(不忍之心)이 ‘대동세’를 이끄는 힘이라고그는 말한다. 그는 국가가 존재하는 한, 전쟁은 그칠 수 없다고 보았다. 그래서 대동세에는 오직 하나의 정부 밖에 없다고 주장했다. 그는 남녀의 불평등을 가장 심각한 사회문제로 보았다. 그래서 가정이 없어져야만 한다고 보았다. 그는 사유재산이 존재하는 한 불평등이 있기 때문에공산사회의 이상을 말하였다. 아홉 경계(九界: 國界[국가의 경계], 급계(級界: 계급의 경계), (황, 백, 흑 등의) 人種의 경계[種界], 形界[남녀의구분], 家界[부자、부부、형제를 사유물로 취급하는 한계], 業界[농、공、상의 재산을 사유물로 하는 경계], 亂界[不平、不通、不同、불공정不公의 법], [사람과 새, 짐승, 벌레 등] 부류의 경계: 類界), 고통의 세계[苦界])가 사라지는 세계가 바로 대동세계라고 말한다. 그러나 가족이나 사유재산이 없는 세계에서 개개인들이 무엇에서 자기 동일성을 찾을 수 있고, 자기를 계속 발전시킬 원동력을 얻을 수 있겠는가? 하지만, 강유위는 모든 불평등이 사라지고 바로 인간만이 아니라, 자연 속의 다른 사물들과 조화롭게 사는 세계를 꿈꾸었다는 데, 그의 대동이상은 매우 흥미롭다.

The philosophies incorporated within Kang Youwei’s The Book of Great Harmony(大同) is not limited to Confucianism but also encompasses Daoism, Buddhism, and even Western Learning. In the book, he had expressed a kind of determinism which distinguishes the development of mankind into three ages, namely from the Age of Disorder(據亂世), to the Age of Rising Peace(昇平世), and finally to the Age of Great Harmony(太平世). The Age of Great Harmony is the world of great harmony(大同) where distinctions like nations or even families are all removed. It is a world where the difference between the East and the West is all resolved. This paper first deals with his philosophy of humanity(仁) and then examines upon some characteristics of the world of great harmony. Kang Youwei believes that every man searches for happiness instead of distress. He says about the world of great harmony, where everybody is satisfied. Therefore he asserts that the “mind of cannot bearing others' pain”(不忍之心), i.e., the mind of humanity is the driving force behind the world of great harmony. He is especially opposed to wars but wars are inevitable as long as nations exist. Thus he insists that there would be only one government in the world of great harmony. He is also opposed to the inequalities between men and women, and in the ultimate age of great harmony everybody would be equal without family boundaries. Also since private properties are sources of inequalities he opposed to capitalism and insisted on implementing communism. According to Kang’s theory, in the world of great harmony the nine boundaries(nations, classes, races, discrimination of men and women, families, industries, chaotic unjustice of laws, discrimination between human beings and other creatures in the nature, painful world) are all removed and everybody is raised equally under one government. However, in a world without families or private properties how would any individual create his identity and develop himself? Still, Kang’s philosophy is quite touching that he tries to overcome all the boundaries and dreams of living in a harmony with not just human beings along but with other creatures in the nature as well.
