서해안 사구지역에 대한 연대측정이 최근 많이 이루어지고 있다. 이에 대한 적절한 검토와 분석이 필요하다고 판단된다. 해안사구에 관한 국내 연구에서 가장 많이 언급되는 지역인 서해안의 신두리사구, 최근 연대측정이 이루어진 운여사구의 고토양과 제주도의 김녕 월정 사구 지역에 대한 연구사례를 분석하였다. 또한 지형도분석과 위성영상을 통해 사구 발달과정을 알 수 있는 소황리사구에 대한 연구 분석 결과도 정리하였다. OSL 연대측정 기법의 한계를 고려한 후, 측정하려는 대상에 관한 적절한 검토가 필요할 것으로 판단된다. 고토양층의 형성연대, 퇴적층 구성물질의 형성연대를 측정하는 것인지, 아니면 이들이 매몰된 상태로 지속된 기간을 측정하는 것인지에 대한 사려 깊은 검토가 필요할 것으로 판단되며, 각각의 방법론의 한계에 대한 이론적 검토가 이루어지고 다양한 연대측정법 자료에 대한 상호검토가 이루어진 후에 홀로세 해수면 변동 등에 관한 정확한 결론이 도출될 것으로 판단된다.

Absolute ages for the coastal sand dunes are being produced with relatively large amount in these days. The OSL dating results from Shindu dune field, paleosol from Unyo dune field, and Gimnyong dune field in Jeju are critically reviewed. Also, relative age dating result from Sowhang dune field is reviewed. Interpretation of absolute ages from dune sands needs extra caution. OSL dating itself has many difficulties and researchers should pay more attention for the exact objects of their researches. In order to correlate the OSL dating results with the fluctuation of coastline during the Holocene, more age dating results using diverse dating methodologies should be compared before a meaningful conclusion can be drawn.
