남극에 세종과학기지와 장보고기지를 운영하고 있는 우리나라는 2008년 이후 남극지도를 제작하고 있다. 기지주변의 대축척지도는 직접 데이터를 취득하여 직접 제작하였으나 소축척지도 제작을 위한 데이터베이스의 구축은 미비한 실정이다. 본 연구의 목적은 이런 현실을 감안하여 소축척 남극지도 제작을 위한 GIS 데이터베이스 구축 방안을 제시하고자 하는 것이다. 이를 위해 먼저, 우리나라의 남극지역 소축척 지도 제작 현황을 살펴보았다. 남극전도와 부채꼴형 소축척지도의 제작현황을 살펴보고 지도제작을 위해 사용된 데이터에 대해 알아보았다. 다음으로 남극 지도 제작에 이용될 수 있는 해외 데이터베이스 중 Natural Earth Data, ADD, Quantarctica 데이터베이스를 분석하였다. 이들 데이터베이스는 많은 공간정보로 구성되어 있으며 이를 활용하여 충분히 남극에 대한 공간정보를 구축하고 남극 소축척 지도를 제작할 수 있음을 알 수 있었다. 마지막으로 남극 GIS 데이터 구축방안을 제시하였다. 현재까지 우리나라에서 제작된 남극 소축척 지도 현황과 해외에서 구축된 남극 데이터베이스 분석을 통해, 전담 부서의 설치, 데이터베이스의 목록 제작 및 획득 방안 조사의 필요성, 데이터베이스 서비스 시스템의 필요성을 제시하였으며 베이스 맵 데이터베이스의 비교를 통해 품질 좋은 데이터베이스 구축의 필요성을 제안하였다.
Korea has two Antarctic stations, King Sejong station and Jangbogo station, and generated various Antarctic maps since 2008. Large scale map of Antarctic stations are generated through direct data gathering, but database for small scale maps are appropriately not constructed. The purposes of this study is to suggest GIS database building strategy for small scale Antarctic maps. Firstly, current status of Antarctic maps generated by Korea are investigated. Secondly, Natural Earth Data, ADD, Quantarctica database are analyzed. Analysis shows that database of Antarctic and Antarctic maps can be made by these database. Lastly, Antarctic GIS database building strategies are suggested; constitution of responsible department map, database list and generation specification, database service systems and need of high quality base map by comparison of base map databases.
