한나 아렌트(Hannah Arendt)의 행위론은 우리가 이 세계에서 움직이고서로 관계를 맺는 방식과 현재의 삶의 형식을 근본적으로 다시 생각하라는 요구에 대한 하나의 답이다. 정치 행위는 인간사의 불확실성을 받아들이고, 동료에게 기대거나 맞서면서 자신의 한계를 끊임없이 확인하면서도 서로 지지하는, ‘함께-있는’ 인간의 삶의 양식이다. 그에 의하면 이러한삶의 양식은 근대의 시작과 함께 점차 사라졌는데, ‘생존’이나 ‘생산’을 위한 활동만이 중요하게 여겨졌기 때문이다. 그러한 활동 말고도 인간은 그저 자기와 다른 인간을 만나기 위해 자기가 누구인지를 보이고 다른 사람이 누구인지를 보는 활동을 하는데 그는 이것이 바로 정치의 본질이라고주장한다. 이 논문은 아렌트의 행위 개념을 가면과 퍼포먼스의 은유를 통해 살펴본다. 가면의 은유는 정치 행위가 수단에 불과한 것이 아니라 다른 사람들과 더불어 있지 않고서는 자기 자신으로 살 수 없는 인간에게 필수불가결한 것임을 드러낸다. 그런 만큼 그것은 ‘함께-있는’ 삶의 양식이 가능하지않은 체제 안에서의 정치 행위는 언제나 저항의 의미를 갖는다는 것도 보여준다. 퍼포먼스의 은유는 이러한 행위가 타인의 현전에 전적으로 기대고 있다는 것과, 타인과 만나는 장소를 생성하는 것이 중요함을 드러낸다. 행위자와 관찰자는 상호감응하고 역할을 바꿔가며 활동하는 세계 속의참여자이며, 이들이 만나 세계에 개입함으로써 오늘날 사라져가고 있는관계맺음의 ‘장소’가 구성된다.
Action theory of Hannah Arendt is a response to the needs of rethinking about how we moving and relating to others in this world. She thinks over our form of life in modern times, especially in the twentieth century. Action is a mode of human life that is being- together. It means that people receive uncertainty of human affairs and realize their limitation and identification by coming in contact with others. This being-together form of life gradually disappears in modern times. Now people take it for granted that only activity for survival or for production is important. But we have another activity besides these. It is the action that people see each other and show who they are. This paper attempts to examine Arendt’s concept of Action in connection with metaphors of mask and performance. We can see action is not mere means to a certain end but indispensable to human’s life of being-together through metaphor of mask. This metaphor also shows action has a meaning of resistance in neo-liberal system. The metaphor of performance indicates action needs the presence of others and a publicly organized space. Actors and spectators are affected each other, and they are both intervened in public world. Through their action, resisting places that gradually disappear today are created and constituted.
