번역 문학은 근대 문학사에서 중요한 역할을 담당했으며, 프랑스 문학의 수용과 번역이 근대 문학에 미친 영향은 결코 무시할 수 없다. 이 글은현대시의 시조이자 ‘국경을 넘어’ 외국시를 전파한 최초의 시인으로 꼽히는 보들레르가 어떻게 수용되기 시작했으며, 그의 작품이 어떠한 방식으로 번역․소개되었는지를 살펴보는 데 주안점을 둔다. 우리의 연구는 당대의 번역 정황에 대한 파악, 구체적인 번역 계보의 추적, 과거 번역가들이 겪어야 했던 제약과 타개책 등을 면밀히 검토하는 것을 지향하며, 궁극적으로는 근대 초기의 번역 문학 및 번역가들을 새롭게 조명하는 것을 목표로 삼는다. 선행 연구에 대한 성실한 확인에서 출발하여 미비한 점을 보완하고, 앞으로의 연구를 위한 전망을 제시하는 ‘재료’로서의 ‘문헌정서’ 작업을 진행함으로써, 연구자는 기존 연구에서 상술되지 못했던 보들레르 관련 문헌들의 특징을 재조명하는 한편 근대 초기 동아시아의 보들레르 수용 및번역 정황에 대한 논의를 촉구하고자 했다. 아울러 과거의 번역들이 보들레르의 원래 의도를 어떻게 구현 혹은 변용시키는지에 대한 논의를 통해, 보들레르 시의 번역에 대한 합당한 ‘번역 비평’의 기초를 마련하고자 했다.
It is a well-known fact that translated literature played an important role in the history of modern literature, and that the influence of acceptance and translation of French literature was especially crucial to the formation of East Asian modern literature. In this article, we would like to focus on Charles Baudelaire, who is considered to be not only the founder of modern poetry but one of the pioneers who made “French poems be read across borders.” Examining how Baudelaire’s works were accepted in the early modern era, in other words studying how they were translated and introduced would be our main focus. Hence, the final goals of this article would be to understand the circumstances in translation, trace the details of genealogy of translation, examine limits and solutions of the translators of the era, and consequently, cast new light on the translated literature and translators of the modern times. We would begin by confirming the preceding researches and then lead to re-organizing references related to Baudelaire, in order to improve some insufficiencies. This work would allow us to find out the missing piece in the existing researches, and clarify the specific circumstances in acceptance and translation of Baudelaire’s works in the modern East Asia. In addition, discussing how the past translations realized or transformed the original intention of the poet would enable us to strengthen the basis of “translation criticism” of Baudelaire’s poetry translation.
