이 글은 1835년 바타비아에서 간행된 메드허스트의 『朝鮮偉國字彙』의 구성 및 내용 상의 특성을 살피고, 이 책이 그 이후에 간행된 19세기 서양인의 한국어 관련 서적에 미친 영향을 검토하는 것을 목적으로 한 것이다. 한국어 연구사라는 측면에서의 가치를 살피려는 것이다. 2장에서는 『朝鮮偉國字彙』의 체제와 내용을 살펴, 한국어 학습 도구로서의 특징을 구명하였다. 한국어에 대해 거의 알려진 바가 없던 시기에, 한자를 이해하는 이들이 한자를 매개로 하여 한국어를 학습하거나, 영어만 이해하는 사람이 한국어 학습에 활용할 수 있도록 구성한 것임을 밝혔다. 3장에서는 19세기에 간행된 서양인의 저작 중에서 직접, 간접적으로 『朝鮮偉國字彙』의 영향을 받은 것으로 밝혀진 책자 10종을 간단히 소개하였다.
The aims of this paper is to investigate the characteristics and composition of Translation of A Comparative Vocabulary of the Chinese, Corean, and Japanese Languages to which is added the Thousand Character Classic in Chinese and Corean and survey the affection of this book on the study of Korean Language in 19th century. In chapter 2, the author studied the characteristics and composition of this book, focusing on the methodology and way of presting the materials. We concluded that Medhurst consulted ‘Wei jü-lui kiai’ and used Chinese Characters as Access Points for studying Korean Language. In Chapter 3, the author briefly survetyed 10 books which are considered to reflect the influence of this book.
