<곱새치기>는 상당히 넓은 지역에서 전승되었고 사설이 채록되었음에도 불구하고, 논의가 축적되지는 않았다. 이처럼 논의가 축적되지 않은 이유는 사설 자체의 특수성에 있다. 우선, 대다수의 사설이 지닌 의미가 불명확하다. 연구자는 물론 <곱새치기>를 즐기는 향유자들마저도 그 의미를 모른다. 그러니까 근본적으로 사설만을 대상으로는 하는 연구는 불가능하다. 사정이 이렇기 때문에 <곱새치기>를 연구하기 위해서는 문학적인 관점보다는 사회문화적인 관점에서 접근할 필요가 있다. 본고는, 일차적으로 향유자들이 생각하는 사설의 향유의미에 대해 관심을 기울인다. 그 향유의미가 연구자들이 생각하는 의미와 다르거나 같건 간에 그 의미는 나름대로 연구의 일차적인 토대가 되어야 한다고 생각한다. 그 다음에는 <곱새치기>가 놓여 있는 사회문화적 환경에 관심을 기울이고자 한다. 그 이유는 무엇보다도 <곱새치기>가 여타의 민요가 놓여 있는 사회 문화적 환경과는 유별나기 때문이다. <곱새치기>가 전승되는 인적 환경과 지리적 환경이 여타의 민요와는 다르다. 즉, <곱새치기>는 광산 지역에서 일하는 광산 노동자들을 중심으로 향유되고, 그 지역에 사는 일부 남자만이 향유한다. 이러한 외부적 환경에 대한 고려는 <곱새치기>에 대한 이해를 좀 더 정밀하게 할 수 있다. 본고는 이러한 논의 방향에 맞춰 연구의 지역적 범위를 홍천군 지역으로 한정하고자 한다. 본고에서는 민요 이해에 ‘지향’이라는 단어를 도입하고자 한다. 민요는 시공간적으로 다양한 상황 속에서 존재하고, 향유자의 구성도 다양하다. 그렇기 때문에 특정 민요 장르의 정체성을 확정적으로 구명하기는 쉽지 않을뿐더러 근본적으로 가능하지도 않다. 지향이라는 단어는 방향성을 의미한다. ‘지향’의 의미는 사설이나 개체요가 지향하는 큰 흐름을 파악하는 것과 밀접하게 연관된다. <곱새치기> 놀이는 주로 광산 막사에서 이루어진다. 그리고 그 구성원도 지역민들이 아니고 팔도에서 모인 사람이다. 이러한 놀이의 배경적 특성은 그 지향성에 영향을 미친다. <곱새치기>는 단순 유희를 지향한다. 이 유희는 현실적인 문제의식이 배제된 채 진행된다. 그러기 위해서는 놀이 장소도 일상적인 생활공간으로부터 차단된 곳에서 이루어지고, 사설도 일상적인 문제의식을 배제하고 단순히 유희만을 지향하는 방식으로 구성된다. 이와 같은 놀이의 특성은 그 참여자들을 일시적으로나마 광산 근무에서 오는 심리적 긴장을 해소하게 한다.


Regardless of the fact that Gopsaechigi(곱새치기) has handed down from considerably large area and lots of data has been recorded, the discussion has not been continued. The reason for this is because of the distinct characteristic of the data itself. Above all, most of the meanings of the data are unclear. Not only the researcher, but also the people who enjoys it do not know the meaning of it. Thus, research that is only based on the data is basically impossible. Instead, in order to conduct a research about Gopsaechigi, sociocultural approach is necessary rather than literary approach. This thesis firstly focuses on what people who enjoys Gopsaechigi thinks about the meaning of the data. Despite the fact that the meaning for them is exactly same or not from the one’s of the researchers, that should be the basis of the research. Next, we will look at sociocultural background of Gopsaechigi. This is because Gopsaechigi has somewhat different sociocultural background compared to other Korean folk songs. The humanistic and geographic environment of it is different from other Korean folk songs. To illustrate, Gopsaechigi was sung mainly by the mine worker who worked near the mine, and now, some of the men in those area enjoys to sing it. These considerations for external influence helps concise understanding of Gopsaechigi. Thus, this thesis will limit the areal extent to Hongchun district following the main points. Term ‘aim’ will be used in this paper for understanding Korean folk songs. Korean folk songs exists in diverse spatio-temporal situations, and there are many different people who sing the song. This is the reason why it is hard to explain a certain Korean folk genre’s identity, in fact this is basically impossible. The term ‘aim’ represents directivity. The meaning of ‘aim’ is intimately related to grasp the concept of the data and particular song. Gopsaechigi is usually done in the mine barracks. And the members are the people who are from all around the country, not the people who are living in that place. Gopsaechigi aim simple amusement. This amusement is done without realistic critical mind. As a result, the playing ground is blocked from the daily living space, and the songs are also composed without daily critical mind, but only aim amusement. The feature of the play is that it removes the psychological anxiety of the members who are participating mine work.
